The wonderful Russian actress Maria Alekseyevna Ouspenskaya, while portraying the ancient Gypsy fortune teller in the Universal Pictures classic, "The Wolfman," intoned the following spooky rhyme:
" Even a man who is pure of heart, and says his prayers by night, may become a wolf when the wolfbane blooms, and the autumn moon is bright.”
Well, Mlle de Karsy is only wearing a crescent moon, so I guess we're safe tonight, but what a gorgeous gypsy costume!
The famous photographer, balloonist and inventor, Gaspard Felix Tournachon, aka Nadar (1820-1910), who was at least 80 years old when he shot this series of De Karsy images, seems to have had a penchant for photographing stage performers in gypsy and oriental costume, and how pleased we are that he did! This postcard was produced at the Etoile studios of Monsieur G. Piprot of Paris, whose "star" label is in the bottom left corner of the image. Please notice the wonderful dragonfly pendant, or pin, at her breast! Card has a stamp and postal imprint on the lower face.
Please examine our high res scans for detail.
