Beautiful and very scarce image of Mlle. Fleuron in costume, wearing a kokoshnik. The color and texture in this image are just gorgeous. The photo was made by Monsieur Oricelly of Paris, a well known celebrity photographer (His name is hard to see, lower right quadrant). Most portraits we find of Meaty Fleuron were taken by Oricelly.
This card was published by NPG (Neue Photographische Gesellschaft) of Berlin, and utilized the very effective Oranotype printing method. Though we haven't been able to learn a lot about the oranotype in its particulars, we can tell you that although most of these we've seen were color tinted images, it was not used for color exclusively. Also, all the oranotypes we've found thus far, share in common a high gloss image surface (which doesn't really show up well on our scanner), lovely, certainly, but like any glossy surface, the least little crimp or scratch stands out. In this case, the surface is beautiful and we consider this to be one of the finest examples of an oranotype we've found.
So that was the way of it, in those days, a French performer, a French photographer, and although there were certainly plenty of printers in France, even if editions of this card may have been printed in Paris as well, NPG of Berlin produced this wonderful high quality card. Germany definitely dominated the picture postcard industry prior to WWI.
A wonderful card.
