Flirty French Flapper Dons Lovely Lace For St. Catherine's Day, French Postcard by A. Noyer of Paris, circa 1920s
The day of Saint Catherine (celebrated on November 25th) is a saint's day traditionally celebrated by unmarried women in France. Yep, if you were still single by age 25, you'd earned the dubious privilege of calling yourself a Catherinette on that day. Women observing the day attended fétes in honor of the Saint and, among other traditions, wore cute, dramatic and sometimes truly bizarre hats that would identify them as Catherinettes. The hats were often decorated in the colors yellow and green, signifying the virtue of patience, a virtue, we feel we should mention, that might actually be put to more use once a person has gotten married :) These cards were sent by friends and family (well meaning, or otherwise :) to Catherinettes on that day).
This is one of three very cute St. Catherine's Day cards we recently acquired out of a series (probably of six) produced by A. Noyer of Paris. Lovely, almost pristine, condition!
