One of a series of great "spider-woman" images, with actress Jeanne Dirys in the role, by Leopold Reutlinger. The lady in the web is an image category we run across every now and then in these old cards, and one which always sparks interest.
The text, "Araignée du Soir...Espoir," or Spider of Night...Hope, is just...well...mysterious, but our hardworking team of well paid researchers (don't we wish :) have come up with the following. The quote is a version of one half of an old French saying:
Araignée du soir bonsoir,
Araignée du matin chagrin,
Which means that if you see a spider at night, you will find happiness, or hope (espoir) of happiness, if in the morning, grief.
Not a lot of information is available about Mlle. Dirys. What is available is a tremendous amount of information on the little group she ran with. Very edgy folks, like Jean Cocteau, Colette, Coco Chanel, Jeanne's husband, (and almost Coco's husband too),artist and designer Paul Iribe, and so on. All about cutting edge art, design, literature, as well as (if the tales are true), lots of turn of the century sex, drugs, and rock and roll. Okay, so maybe not so much of the rock and roll as the Bolero, and Tango :) Still, a wild crowd whose escapades make for some very interesting reading,
