Once presented to Tsar Nicholas II as the Baroness de Laroche, Raymonde de Laroche, actress, motorcyclist and the first licensed woman airplane pilot was a plumber's daughter who apparently was given the title Baroness not through marriage to an aristocrat, but by virtue of her talents, her beauty, and her dauntless courage! Born in 1882 as Elise Raymonde Deroche, Mlle. de Laroche made her first flight in 1909.
"On 8 March 1910, de Laroche became the first woman in the world to receive a pilot licence when the Aero-Club of France issued her licence #36 of the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (International Aeronautics Federation or F.A.I.)." (Thanks Wikipedia!)
On the 18th of July in 1919, an experimental aircraft she was co-piloting crashed at Le Crotoy Airfield, tragically killing both her and her co-pilot.
