EEK! Spider Woman! Vintage Italian Postcard by Giovanni Nanni, circa 1920s
Giovanni Nanni (1888-1969) was an Italian illustrator and painter. The main body of his work dates to the 1920s, though he began in the 1910s and worked well into the '30s. Note the scarf! Signor Nanni had a thing for scarves, no doubt about it. He loved to decorate the scarves in his illustrations with loud distracting patterns. That's fine...we love what he did with them, particularly this one, a favorite of ours. Really though, what's the deal with this idea of a woman spinning a web to catch some unwary victim? There are enough postcards from the early days with that as a subject to fill an album and well, it would be a wonderful collection, right?
