Photographer Leopold Reutlinger loved to take his original images of French artistes and create of them surrealistic montages. This is one of those. Circa 1905, Two separate images of dancer Petit, overlaid and hand tinted to create a truly magical montage. We found another image of Mlle. Petit in the same, or simliar costume, with accompanying information, which suggested to us that this costume was from something called, "Visions Nocturnes," in which she played la Papillon, at la Palais de la Danse.

It is perhaps worth pointing out that Mlle. Petit's costume exhibits what were probably bamboo wing extensions of the sort used by Loie Fuller in her famous "Butterfly Dance," a take on the "Serpentine" dancing Miss Fuller was credited with inventing, and which brought her great fame and popularity. Famous Parisian stage performers were constantly at odds with one another over proprietary rights to routines, techniques, costume and stage tech.

Another point of interest might be Mlle. Petit's relation, if any, to the later, and very famous French dancer and choreographer Roland Petit (1924-2011). We haven't done any extensive research on this, but Roland Petit and his wife Jeannemaire had a daughter, also a dancer, whom they named Valentine! Mere coincidence?
