Les Sables (the sands) d'Olonne (of Olonne) is a seaside community (how romantic is that for a place name, huh? :) on the coast of western France. The subject wears the traditional costume of women from there and wears it well, we think. Beverly Chico, in her "Hats and Headwear around the World: A Cultural Encyclopedia," describes the distinctive headwear as a graceful lace "butterfly" headdress, considered a prognosticator of fertility in early times."
