We don't know the model's name, but I think we'll call her Alice. I mean...look at the size of that pansy! It does feel a bit as if she fell down the rabbit hole, doesn't it? We really love the rose on her huge hat, formed of a cleverly folded tube of, what, silk? Beautiful.

Back to the giant pansy though. What we call a pansy, is called a pensée in French, a word that can refer to the flower, or is also defined as a thought or a reflection. Back in those times, what was known as the language of flowers was actually a pretty important thing. A woman could give a suitor a particular flower in response to his attentions that would signify acceptance and welcome, and give another suitor a different blossom clearly signifying refusal and regret, and it wasn't a mystery either! People knew this stuff. Postcards featuring a woman's image with pansies signified the request: "Remember me," or "Think of me," or often the message: "I'm thinking of you." Sometimes such cards were printed with text to that effect and sometimes it was left up to the sender to write them. As for Alice, her expression is one we might even call "pensive," don't you think? :)

A gorgeous card with minor wear to edges and corners. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

The item you are considering for purchase is, unless otherwise noted, a vintage postcard of approximately 5 and 1/2, by 3 and 1/2 inches. Postage is for fully insured, first class, shipping in a secure photo mailer (to avoid any damage to your purchase in the mails), and we happily combine shipping on all paper goods. If you purchase two cards, we will refund the postage on the second card, and when you purchase three or more cards from us at the same time, your shipping will be entirely free, except for international orders which, because of increases in international shipping rates will still be charged one card's shipping fees on orders of three or more. We do not charge for shipping materials, and as of the date of this listing are still charging below our overall cost on shipping.
