For the uninitiated, Mignon was an unbelievably popular opera from the 1860s, loosely based on a work by celebrated German author Goethe, about an orphaned Romany girl, pure of heart as most heroines of that time and finding her way in the world. Initially, there was a French version of the opera with a rosy ending and then later, a German version with a dark ending. Both gained huge popularity and set the public's imagination on fire. That fever burned for decades!
With the advent of the picture postcard, images of Mignon flooded the European and UK markets. You will find Mignon posed with horses, little toddler Mignons, even kitty-cat Mignons! The publication of these images persisted at least into the 1930s. One of our favorite sub-groupings appeared in the late teens and throughout the '20s, the flapper Mignon with her cute bobbed hair and sometimes the raccoon eyes of the silent screen :) We hope to include a few really nice Mignon images here.
