Mary Astor, who is best known for her role as Brigid O'Shaunessey in the 1941 film version of the Dashiell Hammett novel, "The Maltese Falcon," was born Lucile Vasconcellos Langhanke (1906-1987) in Quincy Illinois. She appeared in her first film in 1920 while yet in her early teens. Her mother and father, both teachers, were adept "stage parents" who apparently kept her (and her earnings), on a very tight leash until she was in her twenties, keeping her a virtual prisoner in the lavish Hollywood mansion they'd purchased with her earnings, allowing her a five dollar per week allowance out of the 2500 dollars a week she was earning, and accompanying her to her work at the film studios in order to keep a close eye on her. When finally she made a break from them, they took her to court, suing her for financial support. When this appeared in the press, the resulting scandal seriously threatened her career.
Wikipedia offers a long, detailed biography that makes for interesting reading, the above representing only a tiny bit of Miss Astor's history available in the article.
