Aww...Kitty :)
Welcome to "Idols of the 1920s," where we hope to provide a special, cozy place for those of you who long to linger among the stars of the early silver screen, the hoofers and songbirds of dear old vaudeville's fading hours, a few divas of the grand opera, and of the operetta too, flappers, flappers, more flappers, and of course, and perhaps especially, those femmes fatales who with one smoldering glance can melt a heart, or break it in two. Have fun!
Brigitte Helm was, of course, the star of the 1927 spectacular "Metropolis," and with that feather in her cap, she was offered starring roles pretty much from then on, but almost always cast in the role of the cold-blooded Femme Fatale. She was actually the first choice for the lead in The Blue Angel, but for whatever reason Marlene got that plum role.
This is our Idols of the 1920s section, and Fraulein Helm certainly fits right in here, but this particular image is from probably closer to 1930. The photograph was taken by Lucien Lorelle (1894-1968), a hero of France in WWI and a photographer who learned his trade as a portraitist with Henri and Gaston Manuel of Paris, before opening Studio Lorelle in 1927. This really helps us date this image, since he sold Studio Lorelle, and opened Studio "Lucien Lorelle" in 1935, so we can place this image at between '27 and '35, and probably before 1935, as Fraulein Helm, due to many complications in her life (legal difficulties, and her marriage to a Jewish industrialist in Nazi Germany, were just two of these), stopped making films in 1935.
