Risque German Boudoir Image with Tiger Skin, circa 1906 by redpoulaine

$

19.00 USD

Very nice German boudoir image! No idea on either photographer or model.
The card was published by Paul Fink of Berlin, a postcard publisher, and printer. According to one of our very favorite sites online when researching German photo image postcards, The Postcard Album (link below),

http://www.tpa-project.info/html/body_paul_finkenrath.html

The Paul Fink company was absorbed by the conglomerate Albrecht and Meister (Amag). This occurred probably around 1909, when they took over Aristophot.
Please note: Paul Fink was NOT Paul Finkenrath. Both companies were Berlin based, but not related.

Nice unposted condition on this one. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Young Lady with Fabulous Lampshade. French RPPC circa 1920s by redpoulaine

Nice RPPC of a pretty young lady in box pleats and classic slip-ons with Louis heels, a religious medallion too. But, the real star of the show is the fantastic lamp on the table, beside her. Look, its cord is wrapped around it proudly exclaiming "I'm fully electric!" What an amazing shade :) We suspect the lamp is hers and that she brought it to this studio to have her portrait made with it!

Nymphs on a Mushroom? Vintage Postcard by Heinrich Traut of Munich, circa 1905 by redpoulaine

$

19.00 USD

Two mischievous woodland nymphs cavorting on an upended mushroom, kind of a weird photo by Munich photographer Heinrich (Henry) Traut :) We love it!

Though he certainly made use of a broad array of environments in his images, Heinrich Traut often juxtaposed his models with very concrete, bulky, or harshly angular structures that contrasted dramatically with their natural physical softness.

Also, when draping his models in the chiton he so often used, the fabric he chose seems to have been less frequently of the soft, silky type often seen in French "costume Grecque" images of the period, and more often a heavily textured cotton (almost like bed sheet material) that held the wrinkles and bends, and we have to believe this was very intentional.

Autographed Opera Soprano Elisabeth Rethberg with Personal Message. Vintage RPPC, circa 1924 by redpoulaine

$

29.00 USD

German soprano Elisabeth Rethberg (1894 – 1976) was considered one of the finest opera singers of the 20th century. She performed internationally, mostly in the '20s and '30s.
Autographs are such fun! Usually Miss Rethberg signed her full name on autographed pictures, but in this case she signed just her first name, and on the back of this card wrote the message (our translation), "To see the picture, is to remember the original." or more directly, "a look at the picture, a remembrance of the original."
Clearly this was a more personal message and a souvenir given to a special friend, or yes, possibly just a generous gesture to a very nice fan :).

Miss Rethberg initially studied in Dresden, Germany, and sang there until 1922 when she joined the Metropolitan Opera Company of New York. This card lists no photographer or publisher. We recognized the singer only because, well...it's what we do :) But a quick google image search under Elisabeth Rethberg or Elisabeth Rethberg autograph may come in handy.

If you'd care to hear her sing, follow the link below to a sound clip on Youtube of a recording of her singing Ave Maria. There's quite a lot more of her stuff available as she was really quite the diva in her time.

A very nice, and very rare, RPPC. No way of knowing if it's a German or an American card as she traveled between the two countries often during the '20s. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Circus Clown Leo Billwarek, Vintage Czech Circus Autographed RPPC, Prague, circa 1910 by redpoulaine

Fantastic clown image!! No history on performer Leo Billwarek, unfortunately...still looking :) The photograph was made at the Atelier R. Grunberger in Prague, probably between around 1906 and 1914, but we're guessing before 1910. On the backs of their cabinet cards produced in the later 1800s, the Grunberger Studio advertised that it was the first studio (presumeably in Prague) to offer color photography.
Postcards featuring circus clowns in authentic period costume are a very collectible genre of picture postcards and this one, in its very nice condition, and autographed, is quite the find!

Unidentified Circus Animal Trainer, Vintage German Postcard by Conrad Seldt of Kassel, 1907 by redpoulaine

26.00 USD

Wonderful vintage postcard of a circus animal trainer in all his gaudy finery. The photo was made in the early 1900s (card stamped with the number 1907, probably the year printed, but if not, it would be very close). It is stamped in the lower right corner C. Seldt, Atelier Kegel, Cassel.
Kassel, formerly Cassel, is an ancient city in Germany perhaps best known these days as the place where the two Bothers Grimm penned and published all those wonderful fairy tales! Photographer Conrad Seldt took over the Kegel Studio in 1901 upon the death of the previous owner, Eugen Kegel, but kept what was by then a very well respected business name in the community.

Great circus card, very nice condition.

Beethoven's Hands...No, Really! Vintage German Postcard circa 1940 by redpoulaine

$

22.00 USD

This is a vintage postcard from the Beethoven Haus in Bonn, Germany, a museum dedicated to that great composer, still in existence today. The photo is of a casting taken of Ludwig Van Beethoven's hands. Researching the style of the paper manufacturer, Agfa's, logo on the reverse of the card, we were able to at least establish that among some collectors, this logo style places the paper as having been produced during WWII.
Additionally, upon visiting the Beethoven Haus's online site and giftshop, we could find no existence of this card in this present day, suggesting that it is currently unavailable. In fact, following our usual dark, mysterious and tangled paths through the world of collectible vintage postcards, we weren't able to find a single one, anywhere, at any price!

A perfect gift for the aspiring musician, the "Schroeder," in your life, or the huge Beethoven fan, or even the Stanley Kubrick fan! A little unsettling? Well, the image itself feels just a little unsettling, no? We were thinking of transferring it to a black T-shirt, you know, on the back side, so that an aspiring musician could feel the master's hands always nudging them forward...or on the front side of the shirt, hmm, no. Still unsettling. I think you'll either love this one or otherwise :) Either way, though, a wonderfully unique item.

Gosh, what a character! :) Can't find any history on her, but we sure wish we could hop into our time machine and take in her act . Be sure to see our second scan for the full body picture with her pigeon toed stance. The little birdies on her hat are so funny. Just for fun, follow this link to hear Helen Kane sing "Button Up Your Overcoat." Miss Van Dyk looks as if she might have sung in Miss Kane's style. Right era, wrong side of the pond :) --Even resembles her a bit! (See our fourth scan, one of Helen Kane and not for sale with this listing)

A Most Disagreeable Man! Vintage RPPC, circa 1920s by redpoulaine

The Disagreeable Man

If you give me your attention, I will tell you what I am:
I'm a genuine philanthropist - all other kinds are sham.
Each little fault of temper and each social defect
In my erring fellow-creatures, I endeavour to correct.
To all their little weaknesses I open people's eyes,
And little plans to snub the self-sufficient I devise;
I love my fellow-creatures - I do all the good I can -
Yet everybody says I'm such a disagreeable man!
And I can't think why!

--William Gilbert

Those lines are from a wonderful song in Gilbert and Sullivan's "Princess Ida" and seemed to fit this fellow to a T :)
Just a wonderfully expressive portrait of an unidentified stage actor, made at the Alb. Rudolf studio in Frankfurt, Germany, we're guessing sometime in the 1920s.
A very nice, unposted, theatrical RPPC.

Flirty French Flapper Dons Lovely Lace For St. Catherine's Day, French Postcard by A. Noyer of Paris, circa 1920sThe day of Saint Catherine (celebrated on November 25th) is a saint's day traditionally celebrated by unmarried women in France. Yep, if you were still single by age 25, you'd earned the dubious privilege of calling yourself a Catherinette on that day. Women observing the day attended fétes in honor of the Saint and, among other traditions, wore cute, dramatic and sometimes truly bizarre hats that would identify them as Catherinettes. The hats were often decorated in the colors yellow and green, signifying the virtue of patience, a virtue, we feel we should mention, that might actually be put to more use once a person has gotten married :) These cards were sent by friends and family (well meaning, or otherwise :) to Catherinettes on that day).

This is one of three very cute St. Catherine's Day cards we recently acquired out of a series (probably of six) produced by A. Noyer of Paris. Lovely, almost pristine, condition!

Gypsy Fortuneteller, Vintage French postcard, circa 1900-1904 by redpoulaine

Lovely, lovely image in one of the much loved collector sub-genres of vintage picture postcards, the "fortune teller." Like "paper moon" images, they are just so evocative of the romanticized era :) We certainly love them.

Very nice condition. The border along the left edge is quite narrow, not, as far as we can tell, due to the card being mis-trimmed, but rather due to the print being mis-aligned on the card stock. The card itself is of the appropriate width. Makes us think about the way we sometimes long for that golden time when things were carefully hand-made before this modern era of cheap plastic mass-production and planned obsolescence, while in those early days of industrial manufacture, those involved certainly looked forward to the bright promise of a perfectly calibrated future. Reminds us of the tailor son in law in the musical "Fiddler on the Roof," who, on receiving his first sewing machine, rhapsodizes, "No more hand-made clothes!" :)

Wonderful Danish RPPC of Actress in Fabulous Headdress, circa early 1910s by redpoulaine

We get very few cards from Denmark in the shop, so this is a treat for us! Absolutely superb print quality, which is something you sometimes find in RPPCs like this one, produced in smaller quantities by a local photo studio. The imprint in the lower right corner is not quite clear enough for us to make out, other than Kobenhavn (Copenhagen) and probably Fredriksberggade which (conveniently) bordered the theater district. On the obverse, there is a stamp in the ubiquitous violet ink of the period, letting us know this card was purchased from the Scala Kiosk. The Scala Teatret was a popular entertainment venue during that period, and the Scala kiosk may hve been associated with it, selling souvenirs of featured performance artists. This gal's wonderfully weird costume looks very Paul Poiret influenced to us, maybe early to mid 1910s.

Sweet portrait! Wonderful erotic image bearing the GA logo of George Agelou, Jean Agelou's brother. Lovely texture and tone. We've seen this chair used as a prop a few times in Agelou images.
Jean Agelou, the better known of the brothers, is practically notorious for his risque and erotic postcard images of the early 1900s. Born in Alexandria Egypt to French parents in 1878, he was active as a photographer in France from at least the early 1900s. He is best known today for his risque and erotic "french postcards."

He and his brother George produced "legitimate" work as well, and though we've read in a few places that George was not himself the photographer, but only handled the business end of their partnership, we've come across plenty of cards with the identifying logo "G A Paris" (G for George rather than J for Jean) and also a few marked Cliché George Agelou which might suggest that George took a more active role than is sometimes supposed, even striking out on his own for a time.

Jean Agelou and his brother George both died in an automobile accident in 1921.
