Vaudeville Performers in Cat Suits, Germany circa 1910s by redpoulaine

Do you love this? I have to say we do. This image was published in the city of Breslau, in what was soon to be the Weimar Republic of Germany at the time, though today it is a city in Poland. Breslau was the sixth largest city in the Germany of the mid 1910s. That's about the best we can do, I'm afraid. "Bender" was some kind of a theatrical review. It looks like an awful lot of fun. The title, "Es Tut Sich Was" translates pretty much as, "It's what's happening!" with almost the contextual feeling of what in the sixties was called a "happening." And that's groovy, Baby!
Okay, sorry, but put us in a room with a cute couple all dressed up in cat suits, and we get silly. I don't know why, we just do. That's love, I guess. Wonderful image. Very nice card.

Sisters, 1921 Lovely Portrait of Two Young Dancers by redpoulaine

Such a charming image! Sisters, possibly, or two close friends. No beaded bandeaus, sultry eyes, or long strands of beads for these two young women, who in 1921, were not yet rushing to join that throng of junior "jazz baby" flappers. This was probably a relief to their parents :) Instead, by their classical attire, they appear to have been following that celestial path opened by Isadora Duncan, or possibly Loie Fuller, whose "Fullerettes" were often photographed similarly garbed for gently choreographed cavorting about in beautifully imagined Elysian fields.

The photographer, Krueger Art Studio, was located in Cleveland Ohio. We searched a high school yearbook from 1921 on the (very) off chance we could research these two, but to no avail.

We also artificially darkened our fifth listing scan so you could more easily make out the girls' names, Mildred and Dorothy, and the year, 1921, written on the back of the photo. *Please note the remnants of album paper and glue at the four corners.*

You might have noticed a light horizontal line in our second scan, near the top edge of the photograph. This is actually the light reflecting off an impressed edge that borders the photograph and the light reflection doesn't exist in a face to face examination. The impressed border is a bit odd, and hard to make out in our scans, but is similar to a press impression on an etching. We really can't say if the studio did this intentionally, or if perhaps years in a tight frame did. The album remnants argue against the framing idea, though.
Please examine our high res scans for detail.

The photograph measures 6 and 1/2 by 4 and 1/2 inches. Though many of our customers have framed some of their postcards to great affect, it's amazing how much more "frameable" that extra inch in length and width make a photo. We'll ship this at the same cost, in the same secure photo mailer, and under the same terms as we ship our postcards.

Saharet Can-Can Dance! Circa 1905/10 by Gerlach of Berlin by redpoulaine

So many ruffles!!! Lovely photograph by Georg Gerlach of Berlin. Very nice condition on this gorgeous card.

Australian born Clarissa Campbell was a tremendously popular dancer in the 1890s and well into the 1910s.

For a very detailed and fascinating bio, follow the below link:

http://www.hat-archive.com/Saharet.htm

We love Saharet. She is certainly one of the most interesting looking dancers of the era we think, and her history is such a lively one!

There are many, many, postcard images to be found of this lovely performer, as well as music hall posters, silent film posters, gorgeous paintings, and even an extant clip from a short film in which she dances the bolero! That film was directed in 1905 by a woman named Alice Guy, who may have been, according to the good people at IMDB, the first woman film director! You can easily access this clip from one of our blog posts. Link below:

http://redpoulaine.blogspot.com/2012/09/saharet-india-rubber-lady.html

We are always on the lookout for nice images of Saharet. Her high kicks out from under countless layers of ruffled skirt and her dark curls drawn up in her trademark chignon, framing her bright and vivacious features, make her images some of the most enjoyable we run across. Yes, we are definitely huge fans :)

A very nice card. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

The Splendiferous Lise Fleuron by Stebbing of Paris, circa 1905 by redpoulaine

22.00 USD

Lise Fleuron was born Marguerite Rauscher on December 1st, 1874. Her father was an Alsatian who, following the Prussian annexation of the Alsace-Lorraine region in the early 1870s, chose French nationality, hence her very "German" name, Rauscher.

She was a popular cafe-concert/music hall performer in the late 1890s and into the 1900s. Her sister Meaty, or sometimes Miati, was likewise the toast of Paris for some time. Both sisters were particularly well known for their plunging necklines, apparently were the constant targets of gossip, which of course only bolstered their careers :)

So, from Rauscher to Fleuron (meaning "jewel," and why? Perhaps Monsieur Georges Ohnet, a popular nevelist in the 1880s, may have had something to do with it. In 1884 he wrote a novel titled, "Lise Fleuron," the tale of a young girl...her fall from innocence...her gradual climb to success in the theaters of Paris...romance, scandal, and according to at least one British reviewer, an utter lack of morality (which might be why it quickly sold through more than 100 editions!). When attempting to research Mlle. Fleuron and her sister Meaty, we run across page after page of references to this novel.
Would it be so surprising to learn that a young actress adopted the name of a very famous fictional siren of the stage? Maybe not so much :) She would have enjoyed immediate "brand recognition," at the very least.

Mlle. Fleuron passed away in Enghien, on the 27th of February, 1960.

A really wonderful portrait of this important Belle Epoque performer by Professor Stebbing of Paris, published by Rotophot of Berlin, and posted in Germany.

Charming photograph! The poses they took really capture a sense of movement. See their audience of two in the window above? :) This photograph just barely misses being the size of a standard postcard out of that period. It's just a touch shorter in length, and a touch wider in the other direction. We'll guess this was taken in the 1930s.

Lydia Johnson, Russian Actress, all a Shimmer. Italian Postcard, circa 1920s by A. Traldi of Milan by redpoulaine

Welcome to "Idols of the 1920s," where we hope to provide a special, cozy place for those of you who long to linger among the stars of the early silver screen, the hoofers and songbirds of dear old vaudeville's fading hours, a few divas of the grand opera, and of the operetta too, flappers, flappers, more flappers, and of course, and perhaps especially, those femmes fatales who with one smoldering glance can melt a heart, or break it in two. Have fun!

Lydia Johnson in a wonderful shimmery, floral, costume. Lydia, (1896-1969) was actually a Russian actress, born Lydia Abramovic, in Rostov. She appeared in silent films in Russia prior to the revolution, but the politics of the new government did not agree with her, so she left the country, eventually settling in Italy. There, she worked mainly on the stage, but continued to appear in films well into the 1950s. She took the name Lydia Johnson as a stage name (Albert Johnson was the name of a dancer she married while still an actress in Russia).
A very nice, unposted card of one of our favorite faces. Photo by Bododi, published by A. Traldi, of Milan. We always love finding one of A. Traldi's cards. Not only are the images often a delight, but the Art Nouveau/Deco logo design on their card backs are such a treat :)

Mlle. D'alencon, Stage Artiste and Courtesan of Belle Epoque Paris, by Leopld Reutlinger, circa 1905 by redpoulaine

18.00 USD

Gently hand-tinted portrait (one of our favorites of this artiste) by Leopold Reutlinger.
Emilienne D'Alencon was a very popular Parisian dancer of la Belle Epoque and also one of "Les Grandes Trois" The Three Great Ones, also affectionately referred to by the people of France at that time as Les Grandes Horizontales, The Grand Horizontals! :) These titles referred to La Belle Otero, Liane de Pougy, and Emilienne D'Alencon, the three most prominent French performers who not only rose to great fame as stage performers at that time, but who also accumulated immense wealth as the mistresses to scions of Industry and members of European royalty. All three rose from very humble backgrounds to rub elbows with the elite of French society, and that feat made them heroes to the people of France who no doubt viewed their brash success as proof of the egalitarian nature of French society, and as expressing the essential nature of "joie de vivre!"
A truly lovely, unposted card from the very early 1900s.

Pola Negri in Lamé Brocade, Unidentified RPPC, circa 1929, Baden, Germany by redpoulaine

$

24.00 USD

Dated 1929 on the obverse, this wonderful unidentified RPPC appears to be of Pola Negri in a fantastic lamé brocade gown, with pearls and a feathered fan as accessories. We know that in 1929 Miss Negri's fortunes failed her. A pet project, "The Woman He Scorned," was a box office flop. The stock market crash of 1929 wiped out most of her personal fortune and according to Sergio Delgado's "Pola Negri: Temptress of Silent Hollywood," she'd put on some unwanted pounds and planned to visit the spas of Baden Baden to take them off, so the location and time appear to fit the history. Also note the careful retouching of this image along her right side (our left), trimming off an inch or so from her figure.

The card was printed on a "K Ltd." RPPC blank, the UK Kodak paper (Eastman Kodak enjoyed the lion's share of the photo-print paper market at that time and was used extensively, if not exclusively, in Europe as well as in the UK).
A gorgeous card!

Wonderful Oranotype of Actress Meaty Fleuron? in Costume by Oricelly of Paris, Printed by NPG of Berlin, circa 1910 by redpoulaine

$

0

19.00 USD

What we believe is a beautiful and very scarce image of Mlle. Fleuron in costume, wearing a kokoshnik. The color and texture in this image are just gorgeous. The photo was made by Monsieur Oricelly of Paris, a well known celebrity photographer (His name is hard to see, lower right quadrant). Most portraits we find of Meaty Fleuron were taken by Oricelly.
This card was published by NPG (Neue Photographische Gesellschaft) of Berlin, and utilized the very effective Oranotype printing method. Though we haven't been able to learn a lot about the oranotype in its particulars, we can tell you that although most of these we've seen were color tinted images, it was not used for color exclusively. Also, all the oranotypes we've found thus far, share in common a high gloss image surface (which doesn't really show up well on our scanner), lovely, certainly, but like any glossy surface, the least little crimp or scratch stands out. In this case, the surface is beautiful and we consider this to be one of the finest examples of an oranotype we've found.
So that was the way of it, in those days, a French performer, a French photographer, and although there were certainly plenty of printers in France, even if editions of this card may have been printed in Paris as well, NPG of Berlin produced this wonderful high quality card. Germany definitely dominated the picture postcard industry prior to WWI.
A wonderful card.

Autographed Opera Soprano Elisabeth Rethberg with Personal Message. Vintage RPPC, circa 1924 by redpoulaine

$

29.00 USD

German soprano Elisabeth Rethberg (1894 – 1976) was considered one of the finest opera singers of the 20th century. She performed internationally, mostly in the '20s and '30s.
Autographs are such fun! Usually Miss Rethberg signed her full name on autographed pictures, but in this case she signed just her first name, and on the back of this card wrote the message (our translation), "To see the picture, is to remember the original." or more directly, "a look at the picture, a remembrance of the original."
Clearly this was a more personal message and a souvenir given to a special friend, or yes, possibly just a generous gesture to a very nice fan :).

Miss Rethberg initially studied in Dresden, Germany, and sang there until 1922 when she joined the Metropolitan Opera Company of New York. This card lists no photographer or publisher. We recognized the singer only because, well...it's what we do :) But a quick google image search under Elisabeth Rethberg or Elisabeth Rethberg autograph may come in handy.

If you'd care to hear her sing, follow the link below to a sound clip on Youtube of a recording of her singing Ave Maria. There's quite a lot more of her stuff available as she was really quite the diva in her time.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kJiVaFwHmyk

A very nice, and very rare, RPPC. No way of knowing if it's a German or an American card as she traveled between the two countries often during the '20s. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Circus Clown Leo Billwarek, Vintage Czech Circus Autographed RPPC, Prague, circa 1910 by redpoulaine

33.00 USD

Fantastic clown image!! No history on performer Leo Billwarek, unfortunately...still looking :) The photograph was made at the Atelier R. Grunberger in Prague, probably between around 1906 and 1914, but we're guessing before 1910. On the backs of their cabinet cards produced in the later 1800s, the Grunberger Studio advertised that it was the first studio (presumably in Prague) to offer color photography.
This particular clown might fit into the category of the "Auguste," or der "Dumme August," a technical term pertaining to performance clowning. It is a type of clown character, the pathetic, clumsy one that is made a fool of, not the malicious one doing the teasing. We read in one article that the Auguste is also often face-painted in a particular way these days, but of course these things change over time and the nasty boo-boo on his head is the big "Auguste" indicator :).
Postcards featuring circus clowns in authentic period costume are a very collectible genre of picture postcards and this one, in its very nice condition--and autographed!!-- is quite the find!

Unidentified Circus Animal Trainer, Vintage German Postcard by Conrad Seldt of Kassel, 1907 by redpoulaine

Wonderful vintage postcard of a circus animal trainer in all his gaudy finery. The photo was made in the early 1900s (card stamped with the number 1907, probably the year printed, but if not, it would be very close). It is stamped in the lower right corner C. Seldt, Atelier Kegel, Cassel.
Kassel, formerly Cassel, is an ancient city in Germany perhaps best known these days as the place where the two Bothers Grimm penned and published all those wonderful fairy tales! Photographer Conrad Seldt took over the Kegel Studio in 1901 upon the death of the previous owner, Eugen Kegel, but kept what was by then a very well respected business name in the community.

Great circus card, very nice condition.

Flirty French Flapper Dons Lovely Lace For St. Catherine's Day, French Postcard by A. Noyer of Paris, circa 1920sThe day of Saint Catherine (celebrated on November 25th) is a saint's day traditionally celebrated by unmarried women in France. Yep, if you were still single by age 25, you'd earned the dubious privilege of calling yourself a Catherinette on that day. Women observing the day attended fétes in honor of the Saint and, among other traditions, wore cute, dramatic and sometimes truly bizarre hats that would identify them as Catherinettes. The hats were often decorated in the colors yellow and green, signifying the virtue of patience, a virtue, we feel we should mention, that might actually be put to more use once a person has gotten married :) These cards were sent by friends and family (well meaning, or otherwise :) to Catherinettes on that day).

This is one of three very cute St. Catherine's Day cards we recently acquired out of a series (probably of six) produced by A. Noyer of Paris. Lovely, almost pristine, condition!

Gorgeous Art Nouveau French Postcard with Gold Pochoir, circa 1900 by E.L.X. of Paris. by redpoulaine

Beautiful! No info on E.L.X., I'm afraid. They produced many of these evocative cards and they tend to be difficult to find. The series also remained popular into the mid-1910s, which is a nice run, given that they were introduced as early as the late 1890s. Notice that this particular card has the undivided back, dating it to 1904 or earlier (probably around 1900 in this case), but we've seen others in this series that were printed on divided back card stock and postmarked 1915.
The gold colored paint/substance that was applied as a pochoir (fancy-pants term for stencil :) for a decorative border is not all that terribly bright (a hundred years will take their toll), but we must say our scanner really doesn't do it justice at all. It's so much prettier in person. Lovely card in very nice condition.

Great flapper RPPC. Don't know who this gal was, but she certainly had something! Wouldn't be surprised to discover that she was a film actress. Love the costume,

Rita Sacchetto, Dancer and Silent Film Star, with Amazing Lute! (1) circa 1910. by redpoulaine

Rita Sacchetto (born Margherita Sacchetto) in 1880 (sometimes a year or two earlier, depending on source), Munich, Germany, was the daughter of a Venetian painter and an Austrian woman. (Our online sources must have drawn their information from the same fount, since they all refer to Fraulein Sacchetto's mother simply as "an Austrian woman" and much as we'd like to, we can't improve on this :)

As the story goes, her decision to become a dancer immediately followed her seeing a performance by Isadora Duncan, in 1902.

Apparently she studied hard, and three years later, in 1905, she made her debut performance at the Münchner Künstlerhaus.

We think it's very much worth noting that in Fraulein Sacchetto we have not so much one of the early pioneers of that modern, interpretive solo work that changed the way the west looked at dance, but rather one of the early inheritors of that popular movement.

The notion that a woman in her early twenties would suddenly decide to become a dancer, take lessons for three years, and then embark on a career in dance, would have been unthinkable a few decades before, but by 1902, the way had been opened by dancers like Loie Fuller and Isadora Duncan.

Like Fuller, Duncan, Mata Hari of course, and yes, Cleo de Merode too, Rita Sacchetto developed an "angle," or schtick, if you will, that her audiences responded to with enthusiasm. We don't for a moment intend to slight the effort, talent and imagination involved in the process, but point out that in moving away from what many of these modern dancers considered to be the stifling atmosphere and constraints of the long established companies and traditions, the solo interpretists approached the art of dance from a "popular," or "populist," perhaps even "proletariat" direction! We can't forget that these dancers were very well aware of just how "revolutionary" some of their work was. Think of Isadora Duncan and her long red scarf.

Rita Sacchetto called her dances Tanzbilder (literally dance pictures), in the tradition of the already popular Tableaux Vivants, in which, using carefully arranged sets, she performed scenes from famous works of art, making those paintings, already loved by much of her audience, come alive through movement and music.

She was very successful internationally, was brought to the Met in New York by Loie Fuller, appreciated by artists like Gustav Klimt, collaborated with designers like Paul Poiret in Paris and also starred in a number of early silent films in the 1910s.

A gorgeous photo of a gifted artist. Very nice unposted condition!
