Sidewalk Cafe, Belle Epoque Era France, Lace Paneled Curtains, circa 1905/1910 by redpoulaine

Wonderful RPPC. Two young men passing some time on an afternoon long ago.The one on the right is the very image of a left bank poet, no? :)
The pretty server has such a pleasant expression on her face. See the three long panels of remarkably beautiful lace in the window. Really a great time machine image. We feel we are there.

Oh! And call the health police! Our server is wearing a bloody bandage on the index finger of her right hand!

Extravagently Costumed Sea Nymph, circa 1905 by S.I.P. by redpoulaine

22.00 USD

Wonderful, and extremely unusual Belle Epoque costume image. No attribution for the artiste or photographer. Please note: it would appear as if the actress's body stocking offered a little more "definition" than the publisher or photographer deemed acceptable, and so a faux chain mail bikini bottom was drawn onto the negative plate after the fact! We've never run across this before, and we imagine this would result in the image's publication being a very limited one.

The Thief of Bagdad, Magical 1924 Silent Film. Beautiful Unposted Card. by redpoulaine

The Thief of Bagdad, an all time favorite silent film, was directed by Raoul Walsh in 1924. Packed with special effects that still fill one with awe today, it is a truly magical example from the great era of silent film.

Follow the link below to see the full length film on Youtube. A wonderful print with a soundtrack that makes use of the gorgeous Scheherazade, a symphonic suite composed by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov in 1888. This is an investment in time. Two and a half hours long, but very well worth it. Mr. Fairbanks is at his dashing best, Julanne Johnston is lovely, and look out for an appearance by Anna May Wong as a Mongol slave girl!

Leopold Reutlinger of Paris made this lovely portrait of Miss Olga Nethersole (1867-1951) An English stage actress of the Victorian, and Edwardian periods. Gorgeous dress and Belle Epoque choker. Miss Nethersole was a highly regarded actress who toured internationally, was arrested for public indecency following a performance of Clyde Fitch's Sapho, devoted much of her energy to nursing during WWI, and divided the remainder of her long public life between theater, and issues of public health.

Wonderful hand-tinted image of Carmen Gilbert, by Professor Stebbing of Paris. Card was published right around the year 1900 by Monsieur G. Piprot as his star logo indicates. The veil played such an important part in these old images, and so must have been important in their routines as well. If you search online, you can often find short film clips of dancers performing during this period, but of course we are talking about some of the earliest examples of motion pictures, making a number of these Belle Epoque dancers some of the earliest movie stars!

Hot Pink Pillow Fight. Art Deco Flapper Will Not Share. by P-C Paris, circa 1920s by redpoulaine

Mine!!!
Great Art Deco background on this hot pink image of an extremely cute flapper! One of the wonderful "Diaman G E. F." series. Metallic silvery, or ground glass enhanced, ink contrasting with the pink tones doesn't scan quite as glittery as it shows up in person. Great condition, with a greeting on the back in that ubiquitous violet ink of the period.

P-C Paris was one of the most prolific, and loved, of French postcard publishers in the 1920s. We are still hunting down company history, but we can tell you that contrary to popular belief, the P-C in their logo doesn't stand for "post card," or "carte postale." The full company name was "Papeterie de Levallois-Clichy," Clichy being a suburb of Paris. "P-C" also published the "REX" line of postcards. Like many postcard publishers, it probably began as a stationary and printing house that incorporated postcard printing in with its traditional business model when the postcard boom occurred at the turn of the century. P-C Paris was responsible for many of the brightly colored, garish even, tinted postcards that are so dear to our hearts. Lots of romance imagery, lots of tease, and a line of very professionally produced nudes. Catalogs of their work would be a real joy to pour over.
A wonderful card, expressing the irrepressible attitude of the 1920s. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Maria Vinent, Cuban Soprano of La Belle Epoque, Appears Autographed. posted 1903 by redpoulaine

$

19.00 USD

Maria Vinent was a popular soprano singer who was born into an aristocratic Cuban family. She toured Europe and was photographed in costume in a number of images that appeared on postcards of the period.
Available information lists her as having been born in 1898 and passing away in 1988. At first we thought, 'This must be another Maria Vinent,' since that birth date would put her at about five years old when this postcard was mailed, but after closely comparing details of facial feature in a number of different photo portraits we are pretty certain this is the same Cuban singer. It is likely then, that at some point she went on record as being ten years, or so, younger than she actually was, and that she was, perhaps, 16 when this photo was taken.
This is perfectly plausible, both the "fudging" on her age (a very common practice at the time), and that she would have been performing professionally at 16, or even for that matter, 14, also a common practice. This would put her at close to 100 years old when she passed away in Miami, as a respected member of the Cuban exile community. Again, why not? It is a ripe old age, but not really all that unusual.
This card appears to have been autographed. Always a treat! On looking closely at our crop of the signature however, we need to point out the following to our customers. Fountain pens so often produce an inconsistent tone (lines that gradate from semi-transparent to opaque) that when we find a signature whose tone is as solidly black as this one, and with no evident ink pooling in places where we often find it, we are less certain of this autograph than some.
That being said, a really lovely image.

Nude Flapper Alert! Elegant Wardrobe Malfunction, Alfred Noyer Aurographie, circa 1920s by redpoulaine

"It is so very odd," observed Jacqueline to her dear friend Sophie, " but whenever I take tea with Lucinda, she reaches over, ever so casually, to smooth the nap on her cushion, and FWOOP! out it comes!"

"Hrmm....yes, I see what you mean, and I...FWOOP!...Oh! I beg your pardon, my dear."

"Oh, not at all...think nothing of it..."

Alfred Noyer, the prolific French publisher, was responsible for so many wonderful series. His Aurographies were great fun. Often the images are playfully nude or risque, though a great many we find are simply very nice head shot images of young flappers. We know this model from a number of cards out of the period. Her luxurious curls piled so high are stupendous!

A very nice unposted card with minor corner and edge wear.

Two Young Ladies Pose in Front of a Toy Cart, circa 1905 by redpoulaine

12.00 USD

Well, this one will be our desktop image for awhile, we think. Two young ladies posing in front of a cart selling dolls, fans, and little parasols. The seller, we think, is probably the gentleman in the straw bowler in the background. There is also a little boy behind the cart.

THIS IS NOT A POSTCARD. It is a small photographic print (3 and 1/2 by 4 and 1/2 inches) of another print (probably cardboard backed) whose backing, as we can see from this print, had sustained a fair amount of damage to its corners. Though this print is quite old, in fact, we would guess, within a decade or so of the original, it is still a photograph of a photograph. The photo print paper is just thin print paper, which we didn't realize when buying it for the shop, so we are going to sell it for a bit less than our overall costs.

Of course, we don't really like taking a loss on an item, but honestly, we're not in the least bit sorry. This is such a magnificent time machine of an image. Our hearts melted as soon as we saw it, and we had to share it with you. Hope you love it as much as we do.

Long-Haired Sea Nymph in a Necklace, and Little Else, by Gerlach, circa 1905 by redpoulaine

24.00 USD

Gorgeous image. Beautifully subtle coloration on this faux nude by Gerlach of Berlin, probably early 1910s.

We were discussing whether or not the "Long" and "Haired" in our listing title actually needed a hyphen...we might call her a "Long" Sea Nymph, but a "Haired Sea Nymph?" Probably not.

For example: "Catch of the Day. Haired Sea Nymph, braised in Lemon Butter." Not appetizing at all, but "Sea Nymph Braised in Lemon Butter?" Hmmm...food for thought!

Sorry, that was probably in poor taste. :)

Flapper with Pizazz, 1920s French RPPC by C. Bonfort of Marseille by redpoulaine

$

19.00 USD

Wonderful image that really evokes the era, from the subject's perfectly teased bouffant, her raccoon eye mascara, and the wonderful beauty mark painted on her cheek, to the oh, so plunging neckline, the lovely silk turban, and the rhinestone (or conceivably diamond), studded arrow that probably plays a semi-practical role in holding the fabric in place. Her dress, that appears to be silk, has decorative bangles at the hem that could even be little bells. We love this! The decorative scribble lines in the misted background are also very much of that era, very "modern," though we always think that this effect is probably a holdover from the late 19th and early 20th century Pictorialist fashion in photography.

The model is unidentified, and the image has very much the feel of an RPPC, as if she is dressed up for the fete, but her dancing shoes might suggest that she is a professional entertainer. The photographer, C. Bonfort, is a bit of a mystery too. We've traced him/her to a studio in Marseille, at 39, rue Saint-Ferréol. We've found both cartes de visite and cabinet cards out of this studio from the turn of the century on, both of the "family portrait" variety, and of the "artiste" variety.

Marseille, though it was not Paris, was an important cultural center. Almost any big name you find on any of our "Belle Epoque" cards, also performed in Marseille. Some, like Gaby Deslys, preferred it to Paris, and made it their home. Monsieur Nadar (Gaspard-Felix Tournachon), the famous photographer, inventor, balloonist, etc., moved his personal studio there in 1895, and didn't move back to Paris until 1909, just one year before his death. So, C. Bonfort was in good company.

Unusual German Postcard Nude with Fraktur ("Gothic Text") on the Reverse Side, circa 1910s by redpoulaine

$
0
0

29.00 USD

No photographer or model attribution on this very interesting old German postcard. This could almost be an RPPC (though nude RPPCs of this era are very uncommon), except that there is a 4/6 (presumably meaning 4 of 6) printed on the front side of the card, probably indicating that this image is one of a series of six, and so more likely to have been commercially published.

As a nude (arguably semi-nude), it's a lot of fun. The model is in a wonderfully veiled, evocative, and dated, pose, but the thing that really intrigues us is the text "Postkarte" on the reverse side in a very bold Fraktur typeface.

Germany, being the center of postcard production during the early 1900s, mostly produced cards for export as well as for sale within the borders of the German Empire, but this typeface, and the lack of any foreign words for postcard, like "Carte Postale," for example, pretty much precludes the idea of intended export.

The Fraktur typeface goes back a few hundred years in origin, but in modern times was almost exclusively used in Germany. In the 19th century, it became, somewhat controversially, one that many Germans identified with culturally. As a result, the more standard throughout the rest of Europe,"Latin" typeface, was considered by some, to be "un-German." Later, in the 1910s, the argument came to a head, with different factions attempting to force legislation on the issue. In fact, the famous German military commander, Otto von Bismark, refused to read any books that were not printed in Fraktur (Thanks as always, Wikipedia :).

Our card looks to be from around 1910, but we're thinking maybe from the mid-1910s, during WWI, with the bold Fraktur printing of the word Postkarte expressing for the printer, Germany's independence from (the economically important) foreign export market.

Fraktur was also promoted heavily by the early Nazi regime in the 1930s, before (in an abrupt policy reversal), being later abolished by them in 1941, which pretty much spelled the end of its widespread use in Germany, but we believe this card clearly predates the 1930s, and believe the mid-1910s more likely.

A lovely card in so many ways, in very nice unposted condition.

If you purchase two cards, we will refund the postage on the second card, and when you purchase three or more cards from us at the same time, your shipping will be entirely free, except for international orders which, because of sudden increases in international shipping rates will still be charged one card's shipping fees on orders of three or more.

And please come visit our blog at:

redpoulaine.blogspot.com

where we post biographical and historical tidbits, images of cards and photographs for sale, some already sold but remembered fondly, related images of historical interest and sometimes even images of items that have not yet arrived in the shop, but that are expected to arrive soon, as well as coupon codes, links to other related sites, and more!

Reserved for Daniel. Lot of Three. Please do not purchase unless you are Daniel. Thank you. by redpoulaine
