Sennett Girl, Marjorie Beebe, circa 1920s by redpoulaine

19.00USD

Welcome to "Idols of the 1920s," where we hope to provide a special, cozy place for those of you who long to linger among the stars of the early silver screen, the hoofers and songbirds of dear old vaudeville's fading hours, a few diva's of the grand opera, and of the operetta too, flappers, flappers, more flappers, and of course, and perhaps especially, those femmes fatales who with one smoldering glance can melt a heart, or break it in two. Have fun!

Marjorie Beebe was a Missouri girl who went off to California in the early 20s. By the late 20s, she was a very successful player in the silent comedies, and made the transition to the talkies also, but she hitched on to Mack Sennett's star, and when Sennett went bankrupt in '33, Miss Beebe's career also suffered. Today, one can find very little of her work, unfortunately. Great card, posted in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia in probably the late 20s. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Postage is for first class shipping in a secure photo mailer, and we happily combine shipping on all paper goods. If you purchase two cards, we will refund the postage on the second card, and when you purchase three or more cards from us at the same time, your shipping will be entirely free, except for international orders which, because of sudden increases in international shipping rates will still be charged one card's shipping fees on orders of three or more.

Rudolph Valentino and Vilma Banky, Son of the Sheik, Steamy Embrace by redpoulaine

Have fun!

"Let's slip off to a sand dune...real soon...and kick up a little dust." :)

British novelist E.M. Hull, the pseudonym of Edith Maude Winstanley nee Henderson, occupied herself by writing fiction while her husband was away in WWI, and one of the products of her efforts was "The Sheik," which became an international bestselling novel (which Red very much enjoyed reading some years ago, by the way). Following The Sheik, were a number of other books in the desert romance line, a genre which Miss Hull has been credited with originating!

Of course Hollywood had to get in on the act, and who else in the title role but Mr. exotic romance, himself: Rudolph Valentino! His co-star in The Sheik was the charming Miss Agnes Ayres, and this film helped to solidify Valentino's image as the steamy lover. "The Sheik" was released in 1921. In 1926, "Son of the Sheik," the film's sequel, was released. The wonderfully beautiful and talented Vilma Banky was cast as Valentino's love interest in this one, where Valentino played both the sheik, (with Miss Ayres reprising her role as the sheik's lady love), and the son.

Tragically, Valentino died, at age 31, of peritonitis, following an operation on a perforated ulcer, just days following the advance screening of the film. Millions of admirers were heartbroken.
A really fine card in fine condition. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

A really fine card but with a slightly uneven trim, and a rather broad thumb crease that does not really impinge upon the enjoyment of the image, is not even all that noticeable, but we mention it just the same. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Beautifully hand-tinted image published by NPG of Berlin, and utilizing the uranotype method developed in their laboratories. The Uranotype utilized uranium salts in the development and printing process, and we acquired this one for the shop thinking to offer it as a lovely example, and it is, but we discovered a tack, or pin, hole, upper third, center, which of course pretty much destroys the card's value. Still, the image is wonderful.

Time traveling French girl Gisele Grimaux caught in a candid moment, unaware of the fact that she is being photographed while blowing her cover, in 1927 Paris, by posting a pic to Facebook of her smart new handbag, that when turned inside-out, doubles as a snuggly hat! She and the Doctor barely escaped with their lives to the Tardis with this nifty costume (which happens to be Genghis Khan's nightie), while traveling to the outer reaches of medieval Mongolia on important Time Lord business! Worth every bit of risk, we think. Very nice condition on this unposted RPPC. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Les Danref is presumably the name of this dance duo, performing a danse d'Apaches number in which the young lady is apparently taking great delight in showing the audience just where she keeps her folding money, and causing no end of irritation on the part of "her man." Great fun, photographed by Paul Darby, about whom we can find very little apart from the fact that in 1902, a Paul Darby, photographer of Paris, took the graduation photos of young author James Joyce at the Royal College of Dublin, in 1902. Joyce would later spend the last years of his celebrated life as an expatriate in Paris. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Gorgeous, vibrantly hand-tinted Image of a darkly beautiful unidentified Stage performer, taken by Professor Edouard Stebbing of Paris. This card was published using the "emaillographie" method, about which we know absolutely nothing, I'm afraid, but which was used by a Monsieur G. Piprot, a photographer and, in this case, publisher, under the Etoile, or "star" label. The one thing we have observed in cards which M. Piprot identifies as having been produced using this method, is that they are often some of the most luminous, and in terms of coloration, the most strikingly vibrant, we run across. We will list this card in our risque category, because...wow! Very nice unposted condition. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Beatrice, Alfred Noyer Image, circa 1920 by redpoulaine

18.00USD

From the sub-series of "Heroines" within the over-arching and highly collectible series, "Les Plus Belles Femmes de France," or "The Most Beautiful Women of France," produced by the prolific publisher, promoter and popularist of the French art world, Alfred Noyer, we have this truly marvelous offering. Quintessentially "Flapperesque," we don't know if the model's implied character is that of Beatrice who leads Dante out of purgatory, or one of Shakespeare's greatest comedic heroines, Beatrice, from the play "Much Ado About Nothing," but this is positively one of the most evocative and timely flapper images we've ever had in the shop! The quality of Noyer prints speak for themselves. The back of the card has a green tint to it, no idea why, but there is no noticeable tinge on its face. Wonderful card in very nice condition, though please note the gentle crease in upper left hand corner. Please examine our high res scans for detail.
