Paola Borboni, Italian Film and Theater Actress, circa 1920s by redpoulaine

35.00USD

Here at Red Poulaine, we have a special place in our hearts for the Italian actress images of the early 1900s and into the 1920s. The quality of the portrait photography and subsequent postcard publication was particularly rich, with a flair for the dramatic and mysterious. Many of our favorites, like Anna Fougez and Nella Regini, began their careers as sciantose, a variation on the French term chanteuse, meaning female singer, but bringing to it other meanings, and implying a dark, mysterious, exotic quality that appealed to the theater going public at the time, and certainly appeals to us :) Naturally we love all of our images or we probably wouldn't purchase them for our shop, and feel an almost filial affection for the performers onto whom we project imagined personalities and traits (is that weird? :), but there is something about what seems to have been at the time a very Italian penchant for carrying the illusion of the stage and screen out into the public venue, a tendency to make even larger, the already "larger than life" persona of the theatrical personality, that we really love. So we have decided to open a new section devoted exclusively to these Italian artistes. We call it "La Bella Donna," and yes it is a bit of a play on words, given the tendency in many of these cards to focus on qualities of a "femme Fatale" type. We hope you will enjoy these images as much as we do.

Signorina Borboni (1900-1995) enjoyed great popularity in a career which spanned eight decades, during which time she appeared in more than 80 films, beginning in 1916, with her last appearance at around the age of 90, in 1990. She also appeared onstage often, the last time in 1992! In 1924, she appeared in a theatrical production as a mermaid, bare breasted, which seemed perfectly reasonable to her, but was scandalous in Italian theater, at that time, and caused quite an uproar. We are so pleased to be able to share with you this fine card, in almost immaculate condition. Card is signed by the actress. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

The Massarts, Marvelous Gymnasts, circa 1900 by redpoulaine

A hush falls over the audience. Even the calliope has ceased its melodious charm. The ringmaster, with an almost sinister air of mystery, doffs his black silk hat and bows deeply. The air is heavy with the smells of freshly roasted peanuts and apples, popcorn, sawdust, the manure of animals, the sweat of a closely packed crowd. All eyes are glued to the center ring, in delighted anticipation of the unknown. What thrilling spectacle is about to unfold? We can expect tightrope-walkers, acrobats, dancers from strange and forbidden kingdoms, that daring young man, or woman, on the flying trapeze, jugglers and clowns. We are under the big top, the largest tent on the circus grounds, its central pole as big around as the trunk of a great tree, reaching from the eye-dazzling lights and sequined colors of the central ring, up, up into the heights of impenetrable darkness and gloom.
In this section, "Under the Big Top," we hope to entice you with the romantic images of circus performers, and of variety artists whose acts appeared on the bills not only of circuses, but of those variety shows that played on a stage, at a time when the movie industry was still in its earliest infancy, when, before the advent of television, or even radio, entertainment was always live.

What a couple. Fine, fine, image on this old promotional card. Please note international spellings, common on this type of card, presumably with the intention of reaching a wider audience: "marvellous," the British spelling, and "Gymnastes," the French spelling.Fabulous costumes! Fabulous mustache! Act name stamped in the ubiquitous violet ink of the period. Very nice condition. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Lot of Two Lovely Artistes circa 1905 by G Piprot of Paris by redpoulaine

24.00USD

Two lovely young stage performers, Miss Amy, and Miss Remple, in charming, off the shoulder costume, hand-tinted, such gorgeous braids. Please note the "star" mark in the bottom corner. This is the production mark of Monsieur G. Piprot, who operated a postcard production company out of number 2 Rue de l'Amsterdam in Paris. He made use of a process called emaillographie, which like the process oranotypie, (used by the prodigious Mr. Steglitz of Germany), was intended to add depth and clarity to the postcard print. The famous Walery, also Nadar, and many other famous Parisian photographers of the time were often published by M. Piprot under his star label. Not so common, were images actually photographed by G. Piprot, as were these two wonderful cards.

Quite nice condition on both. Please examine our high res scans for detail. We have room only for four scans, so we are giving you two full size fronts, and two close crops, but only one back. The two cards were posted by the same individual, in a lovely hand, and in violet ink, and are very similar in appearance, but please feel free to request a scan of the second card's back. It is only an Etsy convo away!

Nanda Primavera, Italian Sciantosa and Film Actress, circa 1920s by redpoulaine

Welcome to "Idols of the 1920s," where we hope to provide a special, cozy place for those of you who long to linger among the stars of the early silver screen, the hoofers and songbirds of dear old vaudeville's fading hours, a few diva's of the grand opera, and of the operetta too, flappers, flappers, more flappers, and of course, and perhaps especially, those femmes fatales who with one smoldering glance can melt a heart, or break it in two. Have fun!

Born Fernanda Primavera in 1898, La Signorina began her career in 1918 as a soprano singing light opera. She remained primarily a very popular theatrical performer until the 1940s when, having retired from the stage, she began appearing regularly in film, and quite successfully too! She passed away in 1995 at the age of 97. Here, she poses in a big blonde wig! We love Nanda. She reminds us both of Fellini's wife, Giuliana Messina, who starred with Anthony Quinn and Richard Basehart in La Strada.
A very nice unposted card published by A. Traldi of Milan.

Have fun!

Helena Makowska was born in that part of Imperial Russia which is now the Ukraine, was a great star of the Italian and German silents. Later in her life, at the outset of WWII, she was arrested in Berlin and confined for a long period of time to a German prison camp. Later released, she devoted much of her time, for the remainder of the war, to theater work on behalf of the allied war effort.
This is undoubtably one of our very favorite images of her.

Mother and Daughter Embrace 1900s N.P.G. Oranotype by Heinrich Traut by redpoulaine

$
0
0

14.00USD

So sweet. Lovely tone and clarity. We had originally thought this was a French photo, but recently have discovered that this photo series of woman and child was probably taken by Heinrich Traut, dated 1904. Where the stamp was franked, in 1906, a circular mark of indentation shows through a bit onto the image. One of the faults of the beautiful Oranotype reproduction process, appears to have been a sensitivity that shows up any pressure to the surface. This is true with any glossy finish, really, since light reflects off the surface and picks up dents and bends more than it does on a matte finish, but with the Oranotype, it is as if the surface finish is somehow softer, and more easily marred. We'd love to learn more about the process, but it seems to be one of those things that has been lost in the sands of time.

Heinrich Traut (aka Henry), was a German photographer, inventor and patent holder (he patented an electric arc lamp for photographic lighting), of the Jugendstil Epoche whose studio was based in Munich Germany. Thirty years ago, we first learned about Traut's work because signed (identified), images were quite sought after, just as they are today. Traut's images, though we haven't run across a great many actual nudes, per se, sometimes bordered on the erotic and innuendo-ish, and possibly that is what a lot of the hub-bub's been about, but at least half of the Traut images we've run across in intervening years have been beautifully wrought photographs of mothers and children, heart warming, lovely, innocent stuff. Like many of the popular Belle Epoque photographers and their publishers, Traut seems to have covered a very broad spectrum of subject in his work.

Overall lovely condition on this card. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Anna Fouguez, Italian Stage and Screen Diva, Cat with Canary, circa 1920 by redpoulaine

22.00USD
