Unidentified Artiste, Geraldine Farrar, in Art Nouveau Headdress and oriental silk, circa 1905 by redpoulaine

Superb image we believe to be a rare, unidentified, one of Geraldine Farrar, internationally acclaimed opera diva and silent movie star. Magnificent hand coloring on the silk brocade, very stylish background, gilt edged, and even the back of the card is a treasure, having been addressed in a wonderfully flamboyant hand, to a Mlle. Constance Callemard, and posted in 1907.
This was at the very height of Miss Farrar's career.
Born in 1882, in Massachusetts, In 1901 Berlin she enjoyed tremendous acclaim following her debut as Marguerite in Gounod's Faust. One of her fans was the eldest son of the Kaiser, Crown Prince Wilhelm, with whom she was reputed to have had an affair.
This image, if taken in 1907, quite probably shows her in costume for the first performance of Puccini's Madama Butterfly at the Met, in which she appeared. Geraldine Farrar was to remain a member of that company until her retirement in 1922. In between opera seasons she appeared in a number of silent films, and was followed about by crowds of enthusiastic young women who earned the name Gerry-flappers! A real treasure. We are both quite satisfied that this is an image of Geraldine Farrar, but please, before purchasing this card, google image search Miss Farrar and satisfy yourself. We want you happy with your purchase.

Beautiful Weideman Nude, circa 1920s by redpoulaine

Magnus Weideman was born in Hamburg, Germany, in 1880. In a short biographical letter he composed on his 75th birthday, he wrote that he always wanted to be an artist, but that it was not for him an option. He studied theology instead. After serving in the Red Cross during WWI, he finally began writing, painting and taking photos. He was a follower of the Naturist movement, and his nude photographic portraits are these days quite sought after. We recognized this as one of his images, having sold another (which, unlike this one, was attributed), in this same series, and find the repeating geometrical pattern in the flooring in contrast with the soft curves of the model's body, the sun's rays contrasting with the shadows, well...it's just wonderful. A wonderful find. The card does show some wear.

French Artiste Mlle. Champin at the Trianon, circa 1900 by redpoulaine

$

18.00USD

Wonderful Belle Epoque image of Mlle. Champin in classic flowered, feathered and jeweled head decoration, photographed while she was booked at the Trianon in Paris. The Trianon still exists in Paris today. It was built, originally in 1894, at the Grand Garden of the Elysee-Montmarte, was called The Trianon Concert, then was destroyed by fire in 1900, rebuilt and then renamed a few times after that, being called, for a short time beginning in 1903, the Theatre Victor Hugo.
We can find no definite information on Mlle. Champin. Also elusive is the photographer, called Duguy by some of our French associates, Dulguy, by others, s/he does not seem to have been terribly prolific, but those images we've come across have been, for the most part, very fine. All in all, a lovely, unposted card with an undivided back and an overall appearance allowing us to date it at somewhere between 1895 and 1904.

It seems as if the era during which anything "cat" in one's shop window sold immediately is long past. We have explained to our cats that this is nothing personal-that they are still appreciated-but we just haven't found that cute cat images we try in the shop get much response! Brigitte Helm, Silent Movie Star of Metropolis, in a Silken Turban and Beads, circa 1920s by redpoulaine

19.00USD

Welcome to "Idols of the 1920s," where we hope to provide a special, cozy place for those of you who long to linger among the stars of the early silver screen, the hoofers and songbirds of dear old vaudeville's fading hours, a few divas of the grand opera, and of the operetta too, flappers, flappers, more flappers, and of course, and perhaps especially, those femmes fatales who with one smoldering glance can melt a heart, or break it in two. Have fun!

Brigitte Helm was, of course, the star of "Metropolis," and with that feather in her cap, she was offered starring roles pretty much from then on, but almost always cast in the role of the cold-blooded Femme Fatale. She was actually the first choice for the lead in The Blue Angel, but for whatever reason Marlene got that plum part.
This card was produced by Ama-Films, the company that, in 1928 produced the popular supernatural horror film, "Alraune," or "Mandrake," with Brigitte Helm in the title role. Researching this card online, we read about the film, which sounds like great fun, is available on Youtube, and we'll watch it tonight to see if this image is taken from that film. Oh the trials we go through...the sufferings...all to bring you a little history :) We'll let you know either way if the movie is a good one.

A wonderful image on a nice, unposted card.

Two Dazzling Irish Vampire Brides of Dracula, circa 1900 Postcard, by Paul Boyer by redpoulaine

$
0
0

18.00USD

Few people today realize that the Russian trading vessel Demeter, which set out from the port of Varna bearing crates filled with earth, and the undead Count Dracula deep within her hold, was forced, by inclement weather, and a strange illness running through her crew, to put into port in Ireland long before ever reaching the English coast.
It was in Ireland then, that lovely emerald Isle, not England, that the dreaded count first established the perverse cult of vampirism in that part of the world.
The ruined tower of Be' lar ney, whose stony croft still looms high upon a darksome hill in an unnamed county, was to become his temporary residence, and two light-footed and fullsome stepdancers, who plied their honest trade in a local tavern, were to become his wives.
So it was that once the Demeter had undergone her repairs and set out once again for England with Dracula aboard, another vessel, the Libertine, bound for France, carried within her hold, a Miss Rosie Riley and a Miss Lizzie Blake, both of whom, upon their arrival on the continent, made straight for Paris, its catacombs, and steady employment as dancers at the Theatre du Chatelet. It may well be imagined that the Parisian nightlife agreed with them, as there was certainly no shortage of delightful young people with whom they might strike up a brief friendship, and even if it seemed a bit of a pretence, when one, or the other of these young ladies introduced themselves as the Countess Alucard, it was seldom taken amiss, as the French loved their dancers, and allowed them a little stage-dressing. Indeed, they often merely assumed that rather than Alucard, they had said "a la carte," which made perfect sense, as it was naturally their favored manner of dining.
These are facts which Bram Stoker (himself an Irishman), left out of his history. We cannot explain the omission, but can only say that the substance of this tale comes to us from a very reliable source.

A gorgeous card. The coloration is so wonderful, but for God's sake! Don't look into their eyes!

We love Nella! One of our favorite people here on Red Poulaine. She was a stage actress, a film actress, and a star of the Italian operetta. Don't miss the Art Nouveau/Deco bridge logo on the back side of the card. The phrase, "Riproduzione Interdetta" is found on many Italian cards from this period.
