Beautifully Hand-Tinted Image Depicting "Faith," posted 1910 by redpoulaine

$

14.00 USD

Referencing biblical scripture, this is an image that is almost certainly one in a series of three cards. Foi, Esperance, and charité, or Faith, Hope, and Charity. "And now abideth Faith, Hope, Charitie, these three," is the pertinent quote from the book of Corinthians (this translation taken from the King James bible). We have run across hundreds of cards from these very popular series of images, produced by many different publishers. Usually the model was a young woman, holding onto a cross (for foi, or faith), a ship's anchor (for esperance, or hope), or a heart (for charité, or charity). That this was a very popular series of images, makes cards from it a popular item for "set" collectors, but we thought as a "stand alone," this was a particularly lovely one.
A very nice card in very nice, posted condition. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Postage is for first class shipping in a secure photo mailer, and we happily combine shipping on all paper goods. If you purchase two cards, we will refund the postage on the second card, and when you purchase three or more cards from us at the same time, your shipping will be entirely free, except for international orders which, because of sudden increases in international shipping rates will still be charged one card's shipping fees on orders of three or more.

Mignon in Tatters, circa 1905, Published by Alfred Noyer by redpoulaine

14.00 USD

Mignon is an opéra comique (a genre of French opera featuring both spoken dialogue, and arias) written by Ambroise Thomas and first performed in Paris, in 1866. The opera was hugely popular, and its main character, a tragic Gypsy girl, set the public's imagination on fire. With the advent of the picture postcard, images of Mignon flooded the European and UK markets. You will find Mignon with horses, toddler Mignons, infant Mignons, and one of our favorites, the Esquimaux Cat Mignon (yep, this one actually does dress a little kitty up in an Eskimo costume, and equip it with Mignon accoutrements! :). Often, whole sets of several cards depicting scenes from the story were published. This is a particularly nice one, which should come as no surprise, as it was published by Alfred Noyer. A really nice card, in very nice condition too!

Cute Couples Romance Fantaisie, circa 1920s/30s by SOL by redpoulaine

12.00 USD

Clean, unposted couples romance postcard featuring wonderful expressions and a snappy Art Deco abstract background, published in France sometime in the 20s, or possibly as late as the 1930s...now...how would you feel if you opened up that mailbox on Valentine's day and found this card waiting inside with a love note from your sweetie? Pretty swell, huh? Well, I bet they would too :) Incidentally, we would recommend that if you like this idea, you send it in an envelope with an enclosed note, thereby preserving the wonderful condition of this antique postcard!

If there were two little cloud bubbles signifying "thoughts" above the heads of these two, we think his would read "Ah, mon Cher, I can hardly restrain myself...j'adore....l'amour...etc." while hers would read, "Now let me see...what can I wear to that job interview? I want to appear sensible,..chocolate... but not too much so...that smart little blue dress, I think...chocolate...the one with the cute cuffs...yes, that one will do nicely...mmm...chocolate."

Great image, great unposted condition, with only very minor wear to edges and corners. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

French Actress Gilda Darthy in Queen's Regalia, circa 1900 by redpoulaine

$

4.00 USD

Gilda Darthy, a highly regarded actress of la Belle Epoque seems, more often than not, to be costumed as a queen. Sadly, we can find no biographical information on her, to speak of. A bit of juicy gossip though!

in 1917, probably about fifteen years after this photo was taken, she was appearing with the Opera Comique company on tour in New York with actor Edgard Beeckman, and apparently, as sometimes happens, the two got a bit carried away with their rehearsals. This resulted in Beeckman's wife, French (Corsican, actually) flapper and all around "Jazz Baby" Irene Bordoni, suing Beeckman for divorce on the grounds of infidelity, and also suing Mme. Darthy for alienation of affection! To give a fair hearing to both sides however, we should mention that Mr. Beeckman counter-sued for annulment, and claimed that his romantic entanglement with Mme. Darthy was entered into with the full consent of his wife.

But that was offstage. In this image, she's looking very regal indeed.

A nice card, posted in 1905. In our listing title, we call it circa 1900. This is because of the card's undivided back. The dividing line on the backs of postcards wasn't present, in most cases, until 1904, so when we list undivided back cards, we just toss them all into the "circa 1900" category, unless we have a definite reason not to.

Amazing Mirabelle Psychic and Spirit Medium. French Postcard, circa 1900 by redpoulaine

$

17.00 USD

Professor Mirabelle Florentine pursued her goal of world domination largely through the use of her precisely tuned, 24 carat gold, thought-wave dissonance interlocutor. This fiendish device enabled her to correctly interpret the idea images of any sentient being (living, or residing in the spirit realm), within a range of 1200 meters. However, and luckily for all of humanity, within weeks of refining the use of this invention, she was seduced by the sudden awareness of otherworldly sights and sounds emanating from some vague astral plane, and casting off all attachment to this world, passed peacefully into a state of incorporeality, never to be heard from again. In this photograph, taken only moments before her momentous dis-incorporation, we are given a fleeting glimpse of this beautiful young genius tragically cursed with a diseased brain. Oh, of only she had used her gifts for good, instead of evil.

Absolutely wonderful image. Of course the above story is a completely nonsensical fabrication. The young woman in the photograph is actually wearing some really lovely French provincial bridal jewelry. Known colloquially by the name "Désireux Marié Déflecteurs," or "Eager Groom Deflectors," the use of which has fallen by the wayside in recent years, though even today, one may find particularly reluctant brides wearing such things, both as head decorations, and elsewhere upon their persons.

...No, but really. We've searched and searched for a bit of history on these wonderful Belle Epoque head decorations, and as of this listing, have come up empty handed. Any information on them would be greatly appreciated.

A wonderful card, circa 1900. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Lot of Two Lovely Artistes circa 1905 by G Piprot of Paris by redpoulaine

22.00 USD

Two lovely young stage performers, Miss Amy, and Miss Remple, in charming, off the shoulder costume, hand-tinted, such gorgeous braids. Please note the "star" mark in the bottom corner. This is the production mark of Monsieur G. Piprot, who operated a postcard production company out of number 2 Rue de l'Amsterdam in Paris. He made use of a process called emaillographie, which like the process oranotypie, was intended to add depth and clarity to the postcard print. The famous Walery, also Nadar, and many other famous Parisian photographers of the time were often published by M. Piprot under his star label. Not so common, were images actually photographed by G. Piprot, as were these two wonderful cards.

Quite nice condition on both. We have room only for four scans, so we are giving you two full size fronts, and two close crops, but only one back. The two cards were posted by the same individual, in a lovely hand, and in violet ink, and are very similar in appearance, but please feel free to request a scan of the second card's back. It is only an Etsy convo away!

We would guess the date of this wonderful family picnic photo at somewhere around the mid-twenties to early thirties. We just love this. Lutece as the Dreaming Venus, by Reutlinger, circa 1900 by redpoulaine

16.00 USD

Lutece (pronounced LOO-tess) was the public persona of the lovely young woman in this photograph. We have not yet dug up any biographical information on her, which is a bit surprising given the number of images of her we've run across. Nearly all of the photos we've seen were taken by Leopold Reutlinger of Paris, the well known theatrical portraitist, and nearly all of them have her attired in that "classical" garb so popular during la Belle Epoque.

Like another popular postcard model of the period, Mlle. Doll, Mlle. Lutece is most often found in nature, by streams, and virgin springs, and particularly in sweet meadows. But while Doll was often photographed in the woodlands, with squirrels, bunnies, deer, peacocks, etc., giving her photographs a distinctly fairy tale feel, Lutece's images were of a more "antiquated" variety, like scenes out of classical Greek, or Roman, myth. She was pictured playing the lyre, or pipes, worshipfully holding aloft a bunch of grapes, or nibbling at them, and as for wildlife, white doves seemed to love congregating near her. And her name was well suited to her, because Lutece is the French word for the Latin Lutetia, or Lutetia Parisiorum, the 3rd Century b.c.e. home of the Parisii, an ancient Gallic people who it is thought first settled the area that became the Roman town, Lutetia, and where now stands the city of lights, Paris. Perhaps she represented to theater goers their forgotten origins, in a simpler, more magical, "golden" time, that the "beautiful era" seemed always reaching toward.
Here, we have a really lovely image of her, one of two we recently acquired for the shop. A very nice, unposted card, circa 1900.

Circus Jugglers, The Three Groegs, circa 1905 by redpoulaine

A hush falls over the audience. Even the calliope has ceased its melodious charms. The ringmaster, with an almost sinister air of mystery, removes his tall black silk hat and bows deeply. The air is heavy with the smells of freshly roasted peanuts and apples, popcorn, sawdust, the manure of animals, the sweat of a closely packed crowd. All eyes are glued to the center ring, in delighted anticipation of the unknown. What thrilling spectacle is about to unfold? We can expect tightrope-walkers, acrobats, dancers from strange and forbidden kingdoms, that daring young man, or woman, on the flying trapeze, jugglers and clowns. We are under the big top, the largest tent on the circus grounds, its central pole as big around as the trunk of a great tree, reaching from the eye-dazzling lights and sequined costumes in the central ring, up, up into the heights of impenetrable darkness and gloom.
In this section, "Under the Big Top," we hope to entice you with romantic images of circus performers, and of variety artists, whose acts appeared on the bills not only of circuses, but of those variety shows that played on a stage, at a time when the movie industry was still in its earliest infancy, when, before the advent of television, or even radio, entertainment was always live.

The 3 Groegs, circus and vaudeville performers. Wonderful publicity photograph, of the sort sent out by theatrical agents to theatrical producers and impressarios. It is very difficult to find such images of circus and vaudeville performers. Images of jugglers are highly collectible, and we are very pleased to be able to offer this one to you.

Very nice condition. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Magnificent 1920s Flapper Portrait by C. Bonfort of Marseille, circa 1920s by redpoulaine

$

24.00 USD

This really is an amazing image. Everything about it evokes the era, from the subject's perfectly teased bouffant, her raccoon eye mascara, and the wonderful beauty mark painted on her cheek, to the oh, so plunging neckline, the lovely silk turban, and the rhinestone (or conceivably diamond), studded arrow that probably plays a semi-practical role in holding the fabric in place. The decorative scribble lines in the misted background are also very much of that era, very "modern," though we always think that this effect is probably a holdover from the late 19th and early 20th century pictorialist fashion in photography,

If you are familiar with the "boudoir" dolls of the period, you'll understand what we mean when we call this woman a living, breathing, boudoir doll! Just so wonderful.

As to the subject herself, she is unidentified, and if she was a well known entertainer of the time, we'll probably recognize her soon, in another "named" image. For now, she's a gorgeous mystery.

The photographer, C. Bonfort, is a bit of a mystery too. We've traced him/her to a studio in Marseille, at 39, rue Saint-Ferréol. We've found both cartes de visite and cabinet cards out of this studio from the turn of the century on, both of the "family portrait" variety, and of the "artiste" variety.

Marseille, though it was not Paris, was an important cultural center. Almost any big name you find on any of our "Belle Epoque" cards, also performed in Marseille. Some, like Gaby Deslys, preferred it to Paris, and made it their home. In fact, any images we've offered by Nadar (Gaspard-Felix Tournachon), the famous photographer, inventor, balloonist, etc., were almost certainly shot in Marseille, as he moved his studio there in 1895, and didn't move back to Paris until 1909, just one year before his death. So, C. Bonfort was in good company.

A wonderful card, in wonderful unposted condition. Please examine our high res scans for detail.
