Dory Dorika, Russian Italian Actress, circa 1920s/30s by redpoulaine

Wonderful showbiz image of Dory Dorika. Born Dorotea Massa, to a Russian mother and an Italian Father, in Odessa, in 1913 (in what was then the Russian Empire and now, the Ukraine).
Signorina Dorika moved with her family to Milan, Italy, while she was still an infant. In Italy, she began performing on the stage as a child, and was a very popular performer for many years. She began making films in the 1950s, and continued to work in film into the mid 1970s. We found no record of her death. Great image of the classic, "Hit it!" pose when one performer halts, mid-routine, and invites another, or others, to take over. Lots of fun.
Some surface silvering (which we always like in older images, personally), with a fair amount of discoloration and paste/album remnants on the reverse side.

LADIES and GENTLEMEN! CHILDREN of all AGES! PRESENTINNNG THE FOURRR VINCENTS! :) Wonderful image. Four little girl circus acrobats. They might look chubby, but those tummies are heavily muscled from the constant tucks and rolls required for those routines. Great Egyptianesque costumery. Please note that "THE 4 VINCENTS," is stamped across the upper surface of this image in the ubiquitous violet ink of the period. This was a promotional card, probably sent out to, or by, agents to promote the act. Can't you just smell the popcorn and roasting peanuts? Very nice unposted condition with only minor edge and corner wear. please examine our high res scans for detail.

Betty Bronson, Silent Movie Star, circa 1920s by redpoulaine

Welcome to "Idols of the 1920s," where we hope to provide a special, cozy place for those of you who long to linger among the stars of the early silver screen, the hoofers and songbirds of dear old vaudeville's fading hours, a few divas of the grand opera, and of the operetta too, flappers, flappers, more flappers, and of course, and perhaps especially, those femmes fatales who with one smoldering glance can melt a heart, or break it in two. Have fun!

Elizabeth Ada Bronson was born in 1906, in Trenton New Jersey. She got her first bit part, at the tender age of 16, in 1922, in "Anna Ascends."
In 1924, after managing with some difficulty to get an interview with Mr. J.M. Barrie (author of Peter Pan), he supported her for the title role in the film version of "Peter,", which she won (beating out both Mary Pickford and Gloria Swanson who vied for the role), and became, after that film's release, a tremendous star!
She worked, on and off until the year of her death in 1971, having made a smooth transition into the talkies. Below, we've lifted directly a charming section out of the article about her on Wikipedia (our faithful friend), concerning her relationship with Douglas Fairbanks Jr.:

Bronson was always rather reclusive with the press, but she did get some attention after being seen with Douglas Fairbanks, Jr.. He had his first childish crush on her, and as he remembered in his autobiography The Salad Days, he stated:

"Another important picture had just started. It was Peter Pan, directed by a clever caricature of a wildly temperamental movie director, Herbert Brenon. After exhaustive tests, Betty Bronson, a pretty and gifted girl in her middle teens, was given this famous role... I fell for Betty! It was my first intensely juvenile, deep-sighs-and-bad-sonnets love. It was not fully requited. She only flirted with me. My rival was a fellow in his twenties, a newspaperman who was to become one of New York's most respected theater critics, Richard Watts, Jr. ...In any event, I was so smitten with Betty, I could think of little else, except when I could call on her, even though her overprotective mother was always just in the next room."

In any case, it is known that Bronson kept all of his letters, bad sonnets and all, and she spoke of him fondly until her dying day.

Hardly Peter Pan-like in this image, Miss Bronson is looking pretty darned steamy :) What fun!
A very nice card. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Chrysanthemes and Dragonfly, Belle Epoque Art Nouveau Image, by Henri Manuel, circa 1905 by redpoulaine

17.00USD

Unlike Leopold Reutlinger and Count Ostorog, aka Walery, who seemed to specialize in "entertainment" photography. Henri Manuel, who with his brother, Gaston, operated the largest photography studio in Paris, covered a very broad array of subjects. That is not to say that Walery and Reutlinger didn't ever step out of the showgirl portrait genre, we know they did, but Manuel was the official photographer for the French government between 1914 and 1944, established one of the earliest "news" photo services, and was well known for his architectural studies. He did not, however, shy away from "eye candy;" far from it! He was quite adept at risque images, and managed to bring a very artful feel to many of his "artiste" portraits.

This card offers a fine example of this, we think. Without question, la Belle Epoque, in France, was the era of the chrysanthemum. In images of pretty young dancers, mothers with their little girls in tow, opera divas, etc., the use of the chrysanthemum as a hair decoration was ubiquitous. Most often, they are seen worn at the temples, and here Manuel positions the flowers in their accustomed location, but without removing them from the stem, creating a thoughtful study with a feel of nature, and the placement of the dragonfly is wonderful. Really a gorgeous image.

***Note*** It might be of some interest to collectors that during WWII almost all of the photographic plates housed in the Manuel studio were destroyed, making images by H. Manuel all but irreplaceable.

Thanks to Wikipedia for most of the historical information in this posting.

One of three wonderful Sapi images we recently acquired, of one of the most popular, and most photographed, of all the French nude models. Apparently her name was Brianna, but past that we know little about her. This is a blank backed card, many of the old nude cards were, since they were often treated more like "trading" cards than actual postcards, and depending on their actual time of publication, may, or may not have even been legal to post through the mails. Very nice condition, probably late 1910s, or early 20s

Mlle.Gregoire, Belle Epoque Performer by Sazerac, circa 1905 by redpoulaine

One of our favorite, and most magical, subgenres of "Lovely Lady" postcards has to be that of the marvelous maenad. These are somewhat idealized, and presumably toned down, versions of those wild maidens of ancient Greece, who in their worship of Dionysus, the god of wine and sensual abandon, got up to all kinds of mischief. The maenad, as an image, was practically the poster girl of La Belle Epoque, expressing that rich, earthy, "joie de vivre," which has come to be seen as so expressive of that era. In our Marvelous Maenad section, we're not all that particular about whether the model is depicted as a woodland sprite, a pagan priestess, or if they're just a couple of Belle Epoque chorus girls unwinding after a tough dress rehearsal. The images we list in this section might have been published anytime between the 1890s and the 1930s. Basically, if they're wearing grapes, grapevines, animal skins, or any of the other accoutrements no self respecting maenad could do without, this is the section they'll end up in. Welcome to the Bacchanal!!! :)

Sazerac of Paris, respected photographer, took this wonderfully hand-colored photograph a la "maenad," published by Monsieur G. Piprot of Paris in the early 1900s. Posted in 1907. Beautiful condition.

Charming, unknown, model posing in a butterfly costume with flowers. Risque Boudoir Image by Traut, Hand-Colored, circa 1905 by redpoulaine

Wonderful Traut image that we'll list in our "risque" section. Not risque by today's standard's, of course, but rather by yesterday's. Beautifully hand-tinted, great clarity, and posted in 1907.
Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Heinrich Traut (aka Henry), was a German photographer, inventor and patent holder (he patented an electric arc lamp for photographic lighting), of the Jugendstil Epoche whose studio was based in Munich Germany. Thirty years ago, we first learned about Traut's work because signed (identified), images were quite sought after, just as they are today. Traut's images, though we haven't run across a great many actual nudes, per se, sometimes bordered on the erotic and innuendo-ish, and possibly that is what a lot of the hub-bub's been about, but at least half of the Traut images we've run across in intervening years have been beautifully wrought photographs of mothers and children, heart warming, lovely, innocent stuff. Like many of the popular Belle Epoque photographers and their publishers, Traut seems to have covered a very broad spectrum of subject in his work.

Gorgeous Hand-Tinted Flapper in Sun Hat by A. Noyer 1910s/20s by redpoulaine

$

18.00USD

We truly love these dramatically hand-tinted images from the teens and twenties (some into the thirties, although by the thirties the style and quality of coloration seems to have changed quite a lot). This one is fantastic! We especially appreciate the creative use of the white "paste" squiggles on the hat itself. Published by the prolific Alfred Noyer, extremely inluential French publisher of the picture postcard, whose sphere of influence extended into the famous Salon de Paris, thereby also having a very marked effect on the direction of French fine arts throughout the early twentieth century, this card is in lovely condition, with only minor corner and edge wear, and some very minor surface scratching.
The young lady wearing the hat was a very popular French postcard model of the time. Her somewhat oddly angled eyes, "Gallic" nose, and tight blonde curls, we more commonly associate with bathing caps than sun hats, as she seems to have spent more time lounging around in swimming suits on pretend beaches in front of elaborate trompe-loeil ocean scenes than any other postcard model we've encountered. We've also seen her in a number of risque and semi-nude images, though we cannot recall ever seeing her in any completely nude images. Wish we knew more about her. It always brings home to us the changes wrought by the passage of time when we see that so many of these extremely popular actresses and models, in whose images we trade, have been all but completely forgotten in so short a time.

La Belle Otero, Belle Epoque Dancer Extraordinaire, in "Salome" Garb, circa 1900 by redpoulaine

22.00USD

Welcome to our "Songs of Salome" collection. We are very excited to be offering you this fine selection of carefully chosen cards which share the following traits in common:
They are nearly all over one hundred years old, in very nice condition for their age, offer beautiful images of dancers, actresses and singers in costumes typical of the Art Nouveau style, mostly photographed by famous and well respected photographers of the period, and with a definite emphasis on the "oriental" fashion of jewelry and adornment so popular during that time which has come to be known as La Belle Epoque.

"While still in her teens, Agustina Otero Iglesias had changed her name to Caroline Otero and reinvented her history as well, claiming to be the product of a love match between a dashing nobleman and a dark-eyed Gypsy princess. So it was that upon her arrival in Paris, she was no longer Agustina, the poor peasant girl from a small town in Galicia, but "La Belle Otero," the seductive Andalusian Gypsy dancer.

Once in Paris, and surrounding herself with the mystique of her new image, it wasn't long before she found work as a dancer in the Folies Bergère. Before long, she was the talk of that city of lights, a top billing attraction, and within a few short years, one of the most famous women in France."

Please follow the link below to our blog, where we have posted a relatively brief, but quite detailed account of La Belle Otero's life, as well as many additional images!

In this image, she is posing in a marvelous Salome-esque costume. Original photograph by the famous Leopold Reutlinger of Paris. Posted in 1902, this is a very nice card, though there is a small blotch of ink in the corner that soaked through from the back of the card and was not blotted up quickly enough by the original sender. But we're not interested in making a profit with our shipping fees, and we will refund any amount left over beyond our cost.

Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Postage is for first class shipping in a secure photo mailer, and we happily combine shipping on all paper goods. If you purchase two cards, we will refund the postage on the second card, and when you purchase three or more cards from us at the same time, your shipping will be entirely free, except for international orders which, because of sudden increases in international shipping rates will still be charged one card's shipping fees on orders of three or more.

And please come visit our blog at:

redpoulaine.blogspot.com

where we post biographical and historical tidbits, images of cards and photographs for sale, some already sold but remembered fondly, related images of historical interest and sometimes even images of items that have not yet arrived in the shop, but that are expected to arrive soon, as well as coupon codes, links to other related sites, and more!
