We call cards like this one promotional RPPCs. It was not produced by one of the big postcard publishers of the time. The pictured dance duo, Les Pastourettes, or their agent, probably paid the photographer, Louis Martin, for a limited printing of this RPPC. Copies of it may have gone to theater managers, paving the way to prospective auditions. If they were hired, more copies of the card may have been sold to audience members as souvenirs, with the venue taking a small percentage of the sales. It was common for performers to make a little extra cash that way.
Monsieur Martin's studio was located at 52 Rue de Faubourg Saint-Martin, in Paris, about 10 minutes walk from the Moulin Rouge, and 15 minutes walk from the Folies Bergere, so he was certainly in a prime spot at that time, to drum up business with hungry talent.
A fascination with the "Classical World," or at least an imagined version of it, was certainly a common element of the Arts during la Belle Epoque. The lovely young brunette playing the male part in this routine is holding the ancient double flute (called the Aulos, in ancient Greece), which Plato associated with the ecstatic cults of Dionysus!
