Marthe Alexandre at the Scala in Paris, by Oricelly, circa 1905 by redpoulaine

Beautiful sepia toned image of Belle Epoque artiste Marthe Alexandre, taken by Monsieur Oricelly of Paris. Exquisite costume. Those great theatrical portraitists each had their own styles, certainly, and Oricelly, who seems to have regularly produced theatrical portraits in these lower contrast tones, was masterful in the blending of his subject with the lovely trompe l'oeil behind her into a soft, magical, image. We have been fortunate to have this image in the shop a few times, and it is definitely one of our very favorites. It was taken, circa 1905, while Mlle. Alexandre was performing at the Scala, a wonderful old Cafe Concert built in the 1870s to seat 1400 patrons, and with a removable glass dome so that in fine weather, if we could just get our time machine working, we might sit at a small table sipping champagne and enjoying the show beneath a starry Parisian night sky Ahhh. Well, this card almost gets us there. :)
Very nice posted condition. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Queen of Spades, Lovely Viennese Style Image, circa 1900 by redpoulaine

$

4.00 USD

Printed right around 1900, this wonderful image was almost certainly from a series of four, representing queens of the four suits, and done in a style that was very popular and coming out of Vienna at that time. We are personally wondering if the artist might have been inspired by Spanish dancer, Caroline Otero. There is a resemblance, and she was, more than once, treated as the Queen of Spades on postcard images. The sender wrote a short poem on the face of the card, "Life is a rose, friendship forever," etc. Not being anywhere near fluent in French, it only takes a couple of words, difficult for us to make out in cursive, to really mess up our ability to translate, but you get the idea :) Old fashioned? yep...Charming? definitely :) Excellent scrapbook item, or a really wonderful Valentine's day offering.

Follow the link below if you'd care to hear what delta blues maestro Robert Johnson had to say about his "Little Queen of Spades." But do we digress? Always :)

Spectacular Image of Hedwig Reicher on Radium Paper, circa 1905 by redpoulaine

$
0

24.00 USD

Gorgeous, hand tinted image of Hedwig Reicher portraying Salome. In a previous listing of another of her images, we described Fraulein Reicher as an opera singer. Our mistake. There was a famous German opera diva by that same name, but from a previous generation of performers.
This Hedwig, born in 1884, was an actress of stage, and later film as well, daughter of Emanuel Reicher, a famous German character actor. At the Stadt Theater in Berlin, she played the role of Nora, in Henrik Ibsen's "A Doll's House," at the age of fifteen, and was still in her teens when, as pictured here, she played Salome, again in Berlin, to her father's King Herod.
That would put the production in 1903 at the latest, but because we can't know for certain, we'll date this image circa 1905.
Salome was one of her favorite characters. "I see Salome as a pure flame," was the way she put it in one interview.
She was also very much involved in the suffragette movement, and is shown in a photograph of suffrage activists a few years later, ***not for sale*** at the end of our listing images.

"German actress Hedwig Reicher wearing costume of "Columbia" with other suffrage pageant participants standing in background in front of the Treasury Building, March 3, 1913, Washington, D.C. The pageant featured an allegory in which Columbia summoned Justice, Charity, Liberty, Peace, and Hope to review the new crusade of women."

Thanks Wikipedia!.

In the 1920s she embarked on a career as a film actress, here in the USA, and appeared in a number of movies, making the transition to the talkies easily, but without ever achieving the level of fame she had decades earlier on the stage.. Fraulein Reicher passed away in Los Angeles in 1971.

The card itself was printed on radium bromide treated paper. Radium bromide is the salt of radium produced when separating radium from uranium ore. It is radioactive, but this card does not glow under an ultraviolet bulb any more than an ordinary postcard, so no worries:) In fact when we first ran across radium bromide paper, we borrowed a friend's geiger counter, just for fun. The radium really does seem to lend a certain vibrancy to images like this one though, particularly the hand colored ones.

Really a spectacular card! Please examine our high res scans for detail.

1920s AZO RPPC. Very Unusual Image by redpoulaine

There is a woman's name written in pencil on the back of this card: Lillie Meyer. also: Cat Spring Tex. This is an odd captivating image, and unusual for an RPPC out of the late teens, 20s. The woman's facial expression is so full of emotion, but it's difficult to put one's finger on what she's feeling. Almost a little scary :) Also, the contrast and definition is so very dramatic, again, not unusual in a professional studio photograph, but far less common in an RPPC.

Travelling Gypsy Musicians, The Fallone Family, circa 1936 by redpoulaine

$

12.00 USD

Though most of the cards we sell fall somewhere between the 1890s and 1930, we do sometimes add a few outliers, and this one is certainly worthwhile. This is an image of four of the Fallone children, part of a traveling Gypsy family of musicians, who performed throughout France, but mainly in, and around the Burgundian city of Dijon. One of the best known of them, Tony "Tieno" Fallone, a very well respected accordionist, settled in that city, founding a recording studio, a school of music, and a musical instrument store. Fallone Music in Dijon is apparently a thriving business to this day. Below, is a link to their website, which in addition to advertising their business, offers a little family history, and a number of wonderful photographs, including one of the vehicle in which they used to travel. The website is in French, but the link we offer is to a translated version, and in English.:

http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=auto&tl=en&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.fallonemusic.com%2Fhistorique.php

This card was posted in 1936, when Tony was 12 years old. This might have been a considerably older image at the time, and Tony Fallone may have been one of those pictured, but we've no idea, really. Below is a quote from a book by Michael Dregni, "Gypsy Jazz: In Search of Django Reinhardt and the Soul of Gypsy Swing," in which he mentions the Fallones, and the souvenir cards they sold back in those days:

"...accordianist Tony "Tieno" Fallone. Born in 1924 and pumping an accordian by the time he was six, Fallone was early on enlisted in his family's traveling band. La Troupe Fallone was a miniature musical ensemble of child prodigies—and curiosities. They became a famous sight in France playing flea markets and /fettes foraines/, and post cards of the children were sold..."

Although we were unable to locate on Youtube any music recorded by Tony, or any of the Fallones, we offer below a Youtube link to a remarkable accordion piece composed by Tony Fallone and Andre Astier, and beautifully performed by Eric Bouvelle, titled "Route Express." We are not big accordion aficionados, but this really is impressive.

Another link below, is to a clip from a fantastic film, "Gadjo Dilo," with some rather more "traditional" Rom music and dance. Though unrelated to our card, PLEASE don't miss this. Gadjo Dilo is a favorite movie of ours, and the song, "Tutti Frutti" is really wonderful:

beatiful Ukrainian Actress Helena Makowska, circa 1920s by redpoulaine

Welcome to "Idols of the 1920s," where we hope to provide a special, cozy place for those of you who long to linger among the stars of the early silver screen, the hoofers and songbirds of dear old vaudeville's fading hours, a few divas of the grand opera, and of the operetta too, flappers, flappers, more flappers, and of course, and perhaps especially, those femmes fatales who with one smoldering glance can melt a heart, or break it in two. Have fun!

Helena Makowska was born in that part of Russia which is now the Ukraine, was a great star of the Italian and German silents. Later in her life, at the outset of WWII, she was arrested in Berlin and confined for a long period of time to a German prison camp. Later released, she devoted much of her time, for the remainder of the war, to acting work on behalf of the allied war effort.

The 60s had nothing on the aughts when it comes to psychedelic imagery. This image could easily have graced a poster advertising the appearance of Jefferson Airplane at Winterland in '66 :)

This is just one of four beautiful images, each of which features a beautiful woman in a mermaid gown reclining sultrily on a divan. Perhaps she is merely waiting for a handsome and scantily clad man with a fan, or better yet grapes, or... well, we're sure your imagination can supply other possibilities.
