Wonderful Oranotype of Actress Meaty Fleuron? in Costume by Oricelly of Paris, Printed by NPG of Berlin, circa 1910 by redpoulaine

$

19.00 USD

What we believe is a beautiful and very scarce image of Mlle. Fleuron in costume, wearing a kokoshnik. The color and texture in this image are just gorgeous. The photo was made by Monsieur Oricelly of Paris, a well known celebrity photographer (His name is hard to see, lower right quadrant). Most portraits we find of Meaty Fleuron were taken by Oricelly.
This card was published by NPG (Neue Photographische Gesellschaft) of Berlin, and utilized the very effective Oranotype printing method. Though we haven't been able to learn a lot about the oranotype in its particulars, we can tell you that although most of these we've seen were color tinted images, it was not used for color exclusively. Also, all the oranotypes we've found thus far, share in common a high gloss image surface (which doesn't really show up well on our scanner), lovely, certainly, but like any glossy surface, the least little crimp or scratch stands out. In this case, the surface is beautiful and we consider this to be one of the finest examples of an oranotype we've found.
So that was the way of it, in those days, a French performer, a French photographer, and although there were certainly plenty of printers in France, even if editions of this card may have been printed in Paris as well, NPG of Berlin produced this wonderful high quality card. Germany definitely dominated the picture postcard industry prior to WWI.
A wonderful card.

Autographed Opera Soprano Elisabeth Rethberg with Personal Message. Vintage RPPC, circa 1924 by redpoulaine

29.00 USD

German soprano Elisabeth Rethberg (1894 – 1976) was considered one of the finest opera singers of the 20th century. She performed internationally, mostly in the '20s and '30s.
Autographs are such fun! Usually Miss Rethberg signed her full name on autographed pictures, but in this case she signed just her first name, and on the back of this card wrote the message (our translation), "To see the picture, is to remember the original." or more directly, "a look at the picture, a remembrance of the original."
Clearly this was a more personal message and a souvenir given to a special friend, or yes, possibly just a generous gesture to a very nice fan :).

Miss Rethberg initially studied in Dresden, Germany, and sang there until 1922 when she joined the Metropolitan Opera Company of New York. This card lists no photographer or publisher. We recognized the singer only because, well...it's what we do :) But a quick google image search under Elisabeth Rethberg or Elisabeth Rethberg autograph may come in handy.

If you'd care to hear her sing, follow the link below to a sound clip on Youtube of a recording of her singing Ave Maria. There's quite a lot more of her stuff available as she was really quite the diva in her time.

A very nice, and very rare, RPPC. No way of knowing if it's a German or an American card as she traveled between the two countries often during the '20s. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Circus Clown Leo Billwarek, Vintage Czech Circus Autographed RPPC, Prague, circa 1910 by redpoulaine

33.00 USD

Fantastic clown image!! No history on performer Leo Billwarek, unfortunately...still looking :) The photograph was made at the Atelier R. Grunberger in Prague, probably between around 1906 and 1914, but we're guessing before 1910. On the backs of their cabinet cards produced in the later 1800s, the Grunberger Studio advertised that it was the first studio (presumably in Prague) to offer color photography.
This particular clown might fit into the category of the "Auguste," or der "Dumme August," a technical term pertaining to performance clowning. It is a type of clown character, the pathetic, clumsy one that is made a fool of, not the malicious one doing the teasing. We read in one article that the Auguste is also often face-painted in a particular way these days, but of course these things change over time and the nasty boo-boo on his head is the big "Auguste" indicator :).
Postcards featuring circus clowns in authentic period costume are a very collectible genre of picture postcards and this one, in its very nice condition--and autographed!!-- is quite the find!

Unidentified Circus Animal Trainer, Vintage German Postcard by Conrad Seldt of Kassel, 1907 by redpoulaine

Wonderful vintage postcard of a circus animal trainer in all his gaudy finery. The photo was made in the early 1900s (card stamped with the number 1907, probably the year printed, but if not, it would be very close). It is stamped in the lower right corner C. Seldt, Atelier Kegel, Cassel.
Kassel, formerly Cassel, is an ancient city in Germany perhaps best known these days as the place where the two Bothers Grimm penned and published all those wonderful fairy tales! Photographer Conrad Seldt took over the Kegel Studio in 1901 upon the death of the previous owner, Eugen Kegel, but kept what was by then a very well respected business name in the community.

Great circus card, very nice condition.

Flirty French Flapper Dons Lovely Lace For St. Catherine's Day 3, French Postcard by A. Noyer of Paris, circa 1920s by redpoulaine

Flirty French Flapper Dons Lovely Lace For St. Catherine's Day, French Postcard by A. Noyer of Paris, circa 1920sThe day of Saint Catherine (celebrated on November 25th) is a saint's day traditionally celebrated by unmarried women in France. Yep, if you were still single by age 25, you'd earned the dubious privilege of calling yourself a Catherinette on that day. Women observing the day attended fétes in honor of the Saint and, among other traditions, wore cute, dramatic and sometimes truly bizarre hats that would identify them as Catherinettes. The hats were often decorated in the colors yellow and green, signifying the virtue of patience, a virtue, we feel we should mention, that might actually be put to more use once a person has gotten married :) These cards were sent by friends and family (well meaning, or otherwise :) to Catherinettes on that day).

This is one of three very cute St. Catherine's Day cards we recently acquired out of a series (probably of six) produced by A. Noyer of Paris. Lovely, almost pristine, condition!

Gorgeous Art Nouveau French Postcard with Gold Pochoir, circa 1900 by E.L.X. of Paris. by redpoulaine

Beautiful! No info on E.L.X., I'm afraid. They produced many of these evocative cards and they tend to be difficult to find. The series also remained popular into the mid-1910s, which is a nice run, given that they were introduced as early as the late 1890s. Notice that this particular card has the undivided back, dating it to 1904 or earlier (probably around 1900 in this case), but we've seen others in this series that were printed on divided back card stock and postmarked 1915.
The gold colored paint/substance that was applied as a pochoir (fancy-pants term for stencil :) for a decorative border is not all that terribly bright (a hundred years will take their toll), but we must say our scanner really doesn't do it justice at all. It's so much prettier in person. Lovely card in very nice condition.

Risqué Glamor Model Image 2, Vintage P-C Paris Postcard, circa 1920s by redpoulaine

Wonderful lingerie model image! The idea behind our "Featured Glamor Model" section is to offer a broad selection of images a particular model appeared in over time. Postcards for these collections take quite a lot of time to gather and so these sections will probably be temporary and very few and far between. In this small collection of seventeen cards, our model runs a course from Sainte Therese in a nun's habit, to a nude celebrant of Spring! This charming risqué image features a model whose identity is a mystery to us. Though in their day these gals were sometimes popular entertainers, stars of silent film or important figures in the arts community that thrived along the Left Bank in Paris, it's often difficult to trace any personal histories, even their names. Sometimes we get lucky enough to hear from a distant relative, history buff or fellow postcard collector who knows something about a particular model and shares it with us. If you know anything about this lovely lady, we'd love to hear from you!

A very nice postcard, so evocative of the era, with only minor wear to edges and corners.

Girl in Jester's Costume, Rare Vintage RPPC, Chicago circa 1930 by redpoulaine

RPPC (REAL PHOTO POSTCARD). One accepted definition is of a photo postcard produced by an amateur photographer in a home studio, or in a local professional studio, rather than by a major postcard publisher. In the upper left quadrant, the card was stamped by Hunter's Studio on West Chicago Ave. in Chicago. Our scanner doesn't show this well, but we read it by lamplight :)

RPPCs, because they were usually printed in very limited editions (for friends or family, that sort of thing) are by definition rarer than diamonds, since diamonds, though expensive, can be found all over, but this particular postcard is probably not one you'll ever see again!

On the card's back, is an AZO stamp box with markings that date it to between 1924 and 1949. Not much help there. AZO was an American producer of photographic paper often used over here for RPPCs. We'll date this card on a hunch to circa 1930 based on image details like carpet pattern, page boy haircut, etc.

Great costume! We particularly love the cuffs with bells on the bare arms. Her dance slippers are well worn. A theatrical performer possibly? We're also guessing more a young woman than girl, really, based on the size of her hands. What's your take on this wonderful piece of a stranger's history? We'd love to hear from you.

Lovely card! Very nice condition. Publisher E.P. The card's obverse lacks the vertical dividing line present on later postcards, making it what French collectors label a "precurseur" and dating it to before 1904. Probably right around 1900.

Very pretty barefoot model in a light shift, posed before an Art Nouveau mandala and wearing lots of the bijoux Orientale so popular during that time. A mandolin rests at her feet. Why? Is her heart so filled with music that she could not bear to pluck even a single note? Who can say?

The Shepherd and the Maiden, Promotional RPPC by Louis Martin of Paris circa 1910 by redpoulaine

We call cards like this one promotional RPPCs. It was not produced by one of the big postcard publishers of the time. The pictured dance duo, Les Pastourettes, or their agent, probably paid the photographer, Louis Martin, for a limited printing of this RPPC. Copies of it may have gone to theater managers, paving the way to prospective auditions. If they were hired, more copies of the card may have been sold to audience members as souvenirs, with the venue taking a small percentage of the sales. It was common for performers to make a little extra cash that way.

Monsieur Martin's studio was located at 52 Rue de Faubourg Saint-Martin, in Paris, about 10 minutes walk from the Moulin Rouge, and 15 minutes walk from the Folies Bergere, so he was certainly in a prime spot at that time, to drum up business with hungry talent.

A fascination with the "Classical World," or at least an imagined version of it, was certainly a common element of the Arts during la Belle Epoque. The lovely young brunette playing the male part in this routine is holding the ancient double flute (called the Aulos, in ancient Greece), which Plato associated with the ecstatic cults of Dionysus! (thank you Wikipedia!)

Gorgeously hand-colored vintage postcard published by NPG, the Neue Photographische Gesellschaft of Berlin, circa 1906. This is one of five cards in a series we recently acquired. We've read that most card series from that time ran to six cards, though we've seen some that are comprised of as many as a dozen cards. Each of the cards in the partial series, of which this is one, are numbered in the bottom left corner. One of them is numbered 9, and since we have only five of these to offer, if you're up to the challenge, you have still a little collecting to do :)

In addition to the lovely coloration, for this edition of the series, NPG utilized their patented "Oranotype" process, one of the innumerable chemical and mechanical processes made use of by printers of photos during that era. Not really knowing what the Oranotype process was, we can at least say that although it was sometimes used for black and white prints too, their glossy surfaces seem usually to have stood the test of time very well, discouraging fading of the photo-print and and in hand-colored images, really helping those colors "pop."

We think the photographer may have been Heinrich (Henry) Traut (1857-1940) of Munich, Germany. He was a very successful portrait and celebrity photographer who was fond of dressing his models in the "Robe Galbée" or contoured gown, commonly called the "mermaid gown" today. Of course, this costume was ubiquitous in the Jugend period, but additionally, Traut often posed his models on or near heavy and very solid-looking studio props like the bench in this image, seemingly constructed of stone, and contrasting sharply with the model's (and her costume's) softness.

The date on the back of the card, 1904, is not the date of the card's printing. It's often mistaken for that, but rather, it's just the recorded patent date of NPG's Oranotype, or "Oranotypie" process.
Loverly condition on this one and really, on all five of these we received in, but all of them have slightly bumped lower left corners. We'll often see, in a group of cards from the same collection, that they share in common the same little bump or crimp as a result of them having been stored, all together, in a particular way for a long period of time. But despite this tiny flaw, a really great card!
