16.00 USD

We don't list many "bathing beauty" images in the shop, but they can be so much fun. We just couldn't resist this sweetheart. One of six from a series we acquired a couple of weeks ago. Some in purple, and some in a kind of deep fuchsia. They are so darling! Polka-dots, yet! Really fine condition, published by Lola in the 1920s.
Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Postage is for first class shipping in a secure photo mailer, and we happily combine shipping on all paper goods. If you purchase two cards, we will refund the postage on the second card, and when you purchase three or more cards from us at the same time, your shipping will be entirely free, except for international orders which, because of sudden increases in international shipping rates will still be charged one card's shipping fees on orders of three or more.

And please come visit our blog at:

redpoulaine.blogspot.com

where we post biographical and historical tidbits, images of cards and photographs for sale, some already sold but remembered fondly, related images of historical interest and sometimes even images of items that have not yet arrived in the shop, but that are expected to arrive soon, as well as coupon codes, links to other related sites, and more!

Mignon in Tatters, circa 1905, Published by Alfred Noyer by redpoulaine

14.00 USD

Mignon is an opéra comique (a genre of French opera featuring both spoken dialogue, and arias) written by Ambroise Thomas and first performed in Paris, in 1866. The opera was hugely popular, and its main character, a tragic Gypsy girl, set the public's imagination on fire. With the advent of the picture postcard, images of Mignon flooded the European and UK markets. You will find Mignon with horses, toddler Mignons, infant Mignons, and one of our favorites, the Esquimaux Cat Mignon (yep, this one actually does dress a little kitty up in an Eskimo costume, and equip it with Mignon accoutrements! :). Often, whole sets of several cards depicting scenes from the story were published. This is a particularly nice one, which should come as no surprise, as it was published by Alfred Noyer. A really nice card, in very nice condition too!

Modest Maenad, German Postcard, circa 1910 by redpoulaine

$

Charming, charming, image from Germany, or possibly Switzerland (we can't quite make out the logo on this one, but the "K" in the upper area of the diamond could stand for Kunzli, the Swiss art publishers).

Of course this image will find its way into our Marvelous Maenads section, but not without some hesitation, just as our maiden shows curiosity, but does not fully embrace (as we so often see in our maenad images) the luscious sensuality symbolized by the grapes. An image that suggests the maiden at the threshold of womanhood? Or possibly this is a young priestess, in the act of making an offering. ( "Oh come on!" a heckler in the audience cries out, "It's a girl with some grapes!" :) Well, in any case, a really lovely card.

Probably printed in Germany, as suggested by the NBC triangle on the reverse side, not a printer's logo, but the mark of the Neue Bromsilber Convention, a cartel, of sorts, initially established by the more influential printing houses of photo postcards in Germany, intended to maintain expense levels and profits agreeable to the members, and thereby avoiding cutthroat competition between printers. Postcards were a huge business in those days.

Risque Nymph Captivated by Reflection, Magical, circa 1905/10 by redpoulaine

$

22.00 USD

We are definitely not experts, but as we understand it, photo printing paper was produced by suspending in a gelatinous base, countless particles of light sensitive material ( metallic salts of silver, or platinum sometimes, and including in this particular case, radium, on the surface of the paper, which when exposed to appropriate light through a negative plate, produced a photograph. Radium images have a lovely glow about them, particularly when hand-tinted with colors, but also when left in black and white, like this image.
A magical woodland nymph image. Sooo lovely! Her reflected image is exquisite. Everything deteriorates with age (sigh), and this card is no exception, but the golden spots of what are probably oxidization, congregating around our woodland nymph, as she leans down, entranced by her own image, perhaps, with her reflected hand, attempting to pick up the reflection of a flower, might be merely age spots on the surface of the photograph. Then again, perhaps this image is actually a window into a world of its very own, where fairies, shining with a gentle golden light, gather around companionably, to share this moment with this beautiful young woman. We'll list this image in our risque section. Certainly not risque by today's standards, but only because it would have been by yesterday's.
Wonderful, and in wonderful unposted condition, too. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Postage is for first class shipping in a secure photo mailer, and we happily combine shipping on all paper goods. La Danse. Belly Dancing Scene in Morocco, circa 1910s by Bertou of Casablanca by redpoulaine

17.00 USD

Wonderfully animated image (clapping of hands, smoking, drinking tea...wonderful!) of dance in Morocco, probably in Casablanca, as that was where Monsieur Bertou resided. Cannot find any history on him, except that he was one of a handful of well known photographers in Morocco in the early 1900s. According to one article we read, having to do with a recent exhibition of early photographs in Morocco, many of these older images went directly to postcard, without ever being published in a larger print format.
There is minor nudity in this image (a bared breast) but we reserve our "risque" postcard section for images that were considered risque, or intended to be risque in those early days, so many of them very tame by today's standards, and this image seems to be simply portraying dance as an experience, and not intending any titillation, so we'll list this one in Belle Epoque.
This card was published by Louys Bauer of Dijon, an art publishing house originating in the mid 19th century that became a very successful postcard publisher.
There is a gentle crease in lower right hand corner, otherwise an exceptional card.

Gabrielle Robinne, French Actress, in Hooded Cloak, circa 1905 by Leopold Reutlinger by redpoulaine

Beautiful effect on this card, wherein a lavender, metallic-toned, design is overlaid around the portrait of Mme. Robinne. This was a technique applied to many Reutlinger cards to great effect, causing the image to really pop!

Exquisite Gabrielle Robinne (1886-1980), was made an officer in the French Legion of Honor for her contributions in the Arts.
She was a star of the stage, and also of silent films, and then the talkies as well, her career spanning some sixty years.

A truly lovely card, with some minor rubbing to the surface in the bottom right quadrant. If you zoom in, you can see some greyish, diagonal rubbing. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Pierrot and Pierrette, Cute Romance Couple, German Card, Posted 1911 by redpoulaine

$

14.00 USD

Adorable image of cute "clown" couple. The publisher's logo is not one we recognize. The popularity of Pierrot and his friends originates in 16th century Italy, with the Commedia dell'Arte, and maintained popularity, largely through the medium of theatrical pantomime, well into the 20th century.

Many today might ponder the attraction of Pierrot pantomimes, relatively short skits, representing the same characters over and over again, involved in lover's triangles, misunderstandings with in-laws, brushes with the law, etc., but they have only to look at the modern 20, or so, minute sit-com appearing on millions of television screens each evening to see that things haven't really changed so much. Only the basic medium has changed. We have always created characters and situations in theater that replayed the same essential stories over and over again, and the reason those characters often lack any real recognizable individuality, is so that we may find it easier to imprint ourselves onto them, as they become mirrors for us and our circumstances. Who better than a sad clown stumbling through life as a suitable image? :)

Because we can't identify the publisher of this card, and also because it is blank backed, we have to guess on era and country of origin. It suggests a German image, circa 1910, to us, and the French post mark on the back looks to be 1911. Just so charming!

Mother and Daughter Embrace 1900s N.P.G. Oranotype by Heinrich Traut by redpoulaine

$
0
0

11.00 USD

So sweet. Lovely tone and clarity. We had originally thought this was a French photo, but recently have discovered that this photo series of woman and child was probably taken by Heinrich Traut, dated 1904. Where the stamp was franked, in 1906, a circular mark of indentation shows through a bit onto the image. One of the faults of the beautiful Oranotype reproduction process, appears to have been a sensitivity that shows up any pressure to the surface. This is true with any glossy finish, really, since light reflects off the surface and picks up dents and bends more than it does on a matte finish, but with the Oranotype, it is as if the surface finish is somehow softer, and more easily marred. We'd love to learn more about the process, but it seems to be one of those things that has been lost in the sands of time.

Heinrich Traut (aka Henry), was a German photographer, inventor and patent holder (he patented an electric arc lamp for photographic lighting), of the Jugendstil Epoche whose studio was based in Munich Germany. Thirty years ago, we first learned about Traut's work because signed (identified), images were quite sought after, just as they are today. Traut's images, though we haven't run across a great many actual nudes, per se, sometimes bordered on the erotic and innuendo-ish, and possibly that is what a lot of the hub-bub's been about, but at least half of the Traut images we've run across in intervening years have been beautifully wrought photographs of mothers and children, heart warming, lovely, innocent stuff. Like many of the popular Belle Epoque photographers and their publishers, Traut seems to have covered a very broad spectrum of subject in his work.

Overall lovely condition on this card. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Nanda Primavera, Italian Sciantosa and Film Actress, circa 1920s by redpoulaine

Welcome to "Idols of the 1920s," where we hope to provide a special, cozy place for those of you who long to linger among the stars of the early silver screen, the hoofers and songbirds of dear old vaudeville's fading hours, a few diva's of the grand opera, and of the operetta too, flappers, flappers, more flappers, and of course, and perhaps especially, those femmes fatales who with one smoldering glance can melt a heart, or break it in two. Have fun!

Born Fernanda Primavera in 1898, La Signorina began her career in 1918 as a soprano singing light opera. She remained primarily a very popular theatrical performer until the 1940s when, having retired from the stage, she began appearing regularly in film, and quite successfully too! She passed away in 1995 at the age of 97. Here, she poses in a big blonde wig! We love Nanda. She reminds us both of Fellini's wife, Giuliana Messina, who starred with Anthony Quinn and Richard Basehart in La Strada.

Beautiful Vaudevillienne with Parisol, by Walery, circa 1905/10 by redpoulaine

$

19.00 USD

Yolis...est de sortie. We have to guess at this beautiful image by Walery of Paris. Yolis is a French nickname for Yolanda. Est de sortie, seems to be something like "on the journey," or "on the adventure." So, perhaps, "The Travels of Yolis?" What is particularly interesting about the title, is that we've come across a number of cards with these same words, and each seemed to have a different artiste, presumably playing the role of this character Yolis. Similar to the way the character Pierrot would appear in endless sketches, different in particulars, but basically the same, for centuries, really, and played by, obviously many different actors.

So, our guess is that this was a popular bit of sketch comedy, or drama, that appeared for a period of time in different venues, kind of like today, on television, sketch comedians like Katherine Tate, or going back a bit, Steve Martin and Dan Ackroyd, would reprise the same characters over and over again in different sketches, much to the delight of their fans.
Some day, some poster seller on Etsy might be puzzling over the origin of the term, "We are two wild and crazy guys," except, of course, that those plaid bell-bottoms, pretty much solve the puzzle, don't they :)

Really a gorgeous photograph by Walery. Particularly fond of the parasol and the silky, metallic sheen to its pattern. A lovely card in very nice condition. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Striking Portrait of Italia Almirante, circa 1920 by redpoulaine

Welcome to "Idols of the 1920s," where we hope to provide a special, cozy place for those of you who long to linger among the stars of the early silver screen, the hoofers and songbirds of dear old vaudeville's fading hours, a few divas of the grand opera, and of the operetta too, flappers, flappers, more flappers, and of course, and perhaps especially, those femmes fatales who with one smoldering glance can melt a heart, or break it in two. Have fun!

Signorina Italia Almirante starred in some of the earliest silent films. She came from a theater family, and began her career on stage. She made a number of successful films, only one of them a talkie. We are thinking this image is pre-1919, as it was in 1919 that Italia Almirante married the well known journalist Amerigo Manzini. After they were married, her images often name her "Almirante-Manzini." In 1935, she moved to Brazil where she continued with theater until 1941, when she died as a result of being bitten by a poisonous insect.
A very nice, unposted card published by A. Traldi, with their beautiful Nouveau--Deco trademark on the reverse side. We should mention that the phrase "Riproduzione Interdetta," like a few other similar phrases that appear on the reverse of older Italian cards, simply means, "Reproduction Forbidden."

This extraordinarily charming image is a bit of a puzzler. It is postcard sized, but blank backed and unidentified. We might think it was a trimmed down photo, but there is a slight border along the upper edge. We are guessing it was a photograph, duplicated on postcard sized stock by a family member for sharing through the mails with friends and relatives. We are also guessing 1920s. Children costumed in this way for a party, or a small (family or church) theatrical production, was not all that uncommon a sight before the advent of television, videos, and certainly, the internet. Even Red can remember such goings on :) These costumes are precious! Very nice condition. Please examine our high res scans for detail.
