We adore these over-the-top hand-tinted masterpieces. Hope you do too! They are playing a bit close in, these two, and we certainly hope things go well for this charming couple, but if it doesn't we can always re-title this card, "Love's Just a Racket." A little of the coloring bled onto the back of the card.
Nice, unposted condition.

"Denkst Du an mich?" or, "Do you think of me?" One of two lovely romantic images from the same series we recently acquired. Very nice condition, with a hint of silvering which only serves to add to the atmosphere. Bears the stamp of the NBC, or Neue Bromsilber Convention, what was essentially a price fixing cartel established by a large number of silver-bromide photo image postcard producers in Germany, established in 1909. Card appears to be dated 1917 by the sender. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Marthe Derminy, Belle Epoque Stage Performer, by Walery, circa 1905 by redpoulaine

So charming! Beautiful image of Belle Epoque artiste Marthe Derminy taken by Walery, the Parisian theatrical portraitist who came to Paris from London in 1900, and had inherited both his professional pseudonym, Walery, and the title of Count Ostorog, from his Lithuanian father, Walery the elder, who had been a very successful photographer as well.

Image circa 1905. We have not been able to find any biographical info on Mlle. Derminy yet, still looking, but it does appear that later in her life, she made appearances in a number of French musical romance films in the 30s and 40s, though it is possible that this was another Marthe Derminy.

We've included in our images above, from wikimedia commons, a public domain image of an 1897 Lautrec portrait of Berthe Bady. The image of the Lautrec painting is FOR YOUR VIEWING PLEASURE ONLY, (sorry caps), and in no way associated with the postcard we are selling! You kidders, you.

Maenad in the Morning, Jugendstil Epoche Stage Performer, circa 1903 by redpoulaine

One of our favorite, and most magical, subgenres of "Lovely Lady" postcards has to be that of the marvelous maenad. These are somewhat idealized, and presumably toned down, versions of those wild maidens of ancient Greece, who in their worship of Dionysus, the god of wine and sensual abandon, got up to all kinds of mischief. The maenad, as an image, was practically the poster girl of La Belle Epoque, expressing that rich, earthy, "joie de vivre," which has come to be seen as so expressive of that era. In our Marvelous Maenad section, we're not all that particular about whether the model is depicted as a woodland sprite, a pagan priestess, or if they're just a couple of Belle Epoque chorus girls unwinding after a tough dress rehearsal. The images we list in this section might have been published anytime between the 1890s and the 1930s. Basically, if they're wearing grapes, grapevines, animal skins, or any of the other accoutrements no self respecting maenad could do without, this is the section they'll end up in. Welcome to the Bacchanal!!! :)

Lovely image of stretching Maenad, posted in Belgium, 1903. Very nice, posted card.

Risque Image, Mlle. Daisy, Semi-Nude French Showgirl, at the Cigale, circa 1910s by redpoulaine

$

29.00 USD

So pleased to have this card to share with you. We have, for some time, wanted to bring some of this series into our shop, but they are, all too often, priced out of reach. "A Travers Les Coulisses" translates as "In the Wings," or "Behind the Scenes." It was a series of cards published in the 1910s, and perhaps into the 20s, by Paris sur Scene, or "On the Paris Scene."

Although the images in this series are posed images, they are clearly impromptu, and lacking a trompe l'oeil background or polished studio setting. The makeup and costumes of the theatrical performers (sometimes an application of rouge that could be appreciated from the 7th row, balcony)--the ways in which they are posed--the quality of lighting--these are simply not up to the standards of images typically produced by publishers like S.I.P., or Etoile, or Noyer, nor by photographers like Reutlinger, Walery, or Manuel, and of course, we adore those fine, artfully produced, images, but the radical different-ness of this series, makes it very special indeed!

Often the photographs are shot backstage, or in dressing rooms amidst a tangle of disused props, framed pictures, and carelessly strewn articles of clothing. Sometimes the dressers and seamstresses are present. Often we see chorus girls and line dancers--almost always half dressed (in so naively gratuitous a fashion as to bring to mind the phrase "naughty bits" a la Monty Python :), and the images are a goldmine for the fashion historian, because these young ladies were on the cutting edge of the coming flapper rage. These were very much the supporting cast of characters, so often invisible to us, of the Paris music hall tradition--but one of the images in this series is apparently of Mata Hari, so the photographers did sometimes capture relatively candid images of some of the big names.
While researching this series, we came across one of them housed in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery of London. My, but we are in good company now! Follow the link below to that site and see how one of the artistes applies her lipstick, using a seated soldier's polished helmet for her mirror.

http://www.npg.org.uk/collections/search/portrait/mw206183/A-Travers-Les-Coulisses

But why is that simple French postcard placed in so elevated a position? Not because the photographer was well known (anonymous), and the girls were, as far as we know, relative nobodies. We can only imagine it is there because the image captures so exquisitely a time and place, and most importantly, people, in history. Of course we'll continue to look for more cards in this series.

So here we have Mlle. Daisy, in costume, at the Cigale Theater, Paris. Marvelous. Very nice, unposted, condition.

Mlle. Mozaia, Parisian Dancer, circa 1905, by Louis Martin by redpoulaine

$

17.00 USD

We have no history on Mlle. Mozaia or the photographer Louis Martin. Research still in progress. What a wonderful card, though. Monsieur Martin is one of our favorite photographers. Unlike Leopold Reutlinger, he was not often very playful with his images, and the cards were not often hand-colored either. Pretty much straight forward portraits of theater people, who were then identified by name, and sometimes by act, such as "Danseuse Eccentrique," with a white ink pen on the negative. So no frills, but very professionally accomplished portraits of often lesser known acts, which is just a lot of fun, but because he was, perhaps, a less well known photographer, and his subjects less well known, it makes research into them more difficult.

His studio was located at 52 Rue de Faubourg Saint-Martin, in Paris, about 10 minutes walk from the Moulin Rouge, and 15 minutes walk from the Folies Bergere, so he was certainly in a prime spot at that time, in what is now, according to hotel reviews, a culturally diverse neighborhood with lots of yummy ethnic restaurants and clubs. Wanna go? :)
A wonderful card.

Marie Marville in Sexy Pin-Up Pose, circa 1900 by Reutlinger by redpoulaine

$

17.00 USD

Mlle. Marie Marville was a very popular stage personality of la Belle Epoque, and the great number of her postcard images speaks not only to her popularity onstage, but to her popularity in the eyes of the public at large.

Unfortunately, unlike some "postcard queens" of the era, among whom were such luminaries as dancer and courtesan La Belle Otero, and possibly the most famous today, the ballerina and interpretive soloist Cleo de Merode, whose histories are readily available in a number of books and online, we haven't yet found anything of note on the life of Mlle. Marville, but we will certainly keep looking.

This is a wonderful pose, and an unusual one! We've come across a few of these almost "risque" back shots of other performers, but never one of Marville, and it will probably sell quickly to one of our customers who collect images of this artiste. (that is not to say that this is a rare card, but that in a few years of pouring over these images, we haven't seen one before, which makes it at least quite scarce :)

Also unusual, is the publisher. Most of the very early postcard images by Leopold Reutlinger, those printed on what our French friends call "precurseur" cards (those with the undivided backs), were published by SIP (Société Industrielle de Photographie), while this one was published by the then fledgling German publisher Rotophot, of Berlin, as indicated by the RPH logo in the bottom left corner of the card. Interestingly, this particular logo lacks the circle that usually surrounds the RPH. This must be a very early Rotophot card, indeed. Why do we love this work? Well, one reason would be moments like this one, when we feel like a botanist in the Amazon, finding a rare flower. Silly? Yup :)

Very nice condition on this one.

May Fris, Tiller Girl, by Gerlach, circa 1905/10 by redpoulaine

$

16.00 USD

May Fris, or possibly Jris, since the letter "F" in Fris on this card, is identical to the capital "J" in Joly Violetta's name as it appears on another G.G. card. It's just that Fris seems a more likely name to us!

Anyway...:) Miss May, was of the "Tiller Troupe." It doesn't even say formerly, so perhaps at that time, she was still a Tiller Girl. "Who were the Tiller Girls?" you ask. They were troupes of what we call today "precision" dancers, the brainchild, or "brainchildren," if you will, of John Tiller of London.

When you see showgirls in Vegas linking arms and high-stepping, or lines of dancers at the Folies Bergere performing the can-can, or fancy geometric routines performed by a few dozen charming Jean Harlow wannabes in an old Busby Berkeley musical, you can thank John Tiller. He is credited with the invention of precision dancing in around 1890, and for the next nearly 90 years bands of Tiller Girls performed on stages all over the world, all of them very carefully trained and in groups whose heights and weights were carefully taken into account when matching them together.

In this wonderful Martin Gerlach image we aren't given any clues as to what exactly Miss May's act was, but she was disarmingly cute, and had a very nice tush! :) So many of the cards produced by Gerlach offered such gorgeous contrast and resolution that there are very few publishers whose cards we share in our shop that can match them in print quality.

A very nice unposted card with minor corner wear.

We find almost nothing about the life and career of Mlle. Joly Violetta. We know she traveled to America, and that in March of 1909, in her first American performance, she danced on the stage of the St. Paul Minnesota Orpheum Theater. For a 25 cent matinee ticket you could have seen her, along with a host of other vaudevillian troupers, including the headliner for the event, a Mr. Will Rogers! What a gorgeous image. In this, and other images of her we've seen, she seems to have worn a fairly tight corset, as well.

Wonderful variety show entertainment image. We are still trying to dig up some biographical info this performer. This kind of "Viktor/Viktoria" act was very popular with music hall audiences during this period, and of course being far less exposed to the world, as we have been by film and television, and all the more so now by the internet, it probably didn't take a whole lot, in terms of "transformation" to really amaze much of their audience.

Countess Rina De Liguoro Italian Silent Movie Queen, circa 1920s Autographed by redpoulaine

24.00 USD

Welcome to "Idols of the 1920s," where we hope to provide a special, cozy place for those of you who long to linger among the stars of the early silver screen, the hoofers and songbirds of dear old vaudeville's fading hours, a few divas of the grand opera, and of the operetta too, flappers, flappers, more flappers, and of course, and perhaps especially, those femmes fatales who with one smoldering glance can melt a heart, or break it in two. Have fun!

Born in Florence, in 1892, Rina De Liguoro is sometimes known as the last of Italy's great silent movie stars. She began her stage career as a concert pianist, then acting in film in the late teens. In 1922, she starred as the Empress Messalina in "Messalina, Fall of an Empress" This was apparently the turning point in her career. Through the 20s, she made several successful films, then moved to Hollywood, but the age of the silents was over, and she won only small supporting roles. She was often billed as Countess De Liguoro, which was appropriate enough, since her husband was a count!
She returned to Italy in the late 30s, rekindled her career as a pianist while occasionally performing relatively small parts in film. She passed away in Rome, in 1966, and was buried in the costume she wore in her first big film, "Messalina," which is a pretty romantic touch, we think :)

Mlle. Meryl, by Oricelly, Gorgeously Hand-Tinted Image, circa 1905 by redpoulaine

17.00 USD

Gorgeously hand-tinted image of unidentified corseted artiste, Mlle. Meryl, in a beautiful calf-length costume. performing at the Scala, one of the many wonderful Parisian Caf' Conc' of the period.
We don't often come across these Oricelly masterpieces so marvelously tinted. This one was printed in Germany by N.P.G. (the Neue Photographische Gesellschaft), one of the most prolific postcard publishers of the time, which turned out fine quality silver-bromide photo print postcards, utilizing technology originally developed in the United States, but improved upon and patented in Germany (but that's another story :). This particular image is an oranotype, a photo printing process used with, as you can see, great success by N.P.G.
It was not uncommon for "identified" images, originally published in France by houses like S.I.P., in black and white, to be printed in a tinted version by a company like N.P.G., and for that version to lack attributions for the artiste or photographer. Understandable at that time, when these performers might have been very well known, the practice nevertheless resulted in enticing mysteries just waiting for us to solve :)

We feel extraordinarily fortunate today, to be sharing this bit of history with you. This is one of our quiet little treasures, all the more precious somehow, because of its seeming insignificance. On the face of things, this seems a fairly common sort of card, at least they were common enough at the turn of the 19th to 20th century: a photographic cameo of a beautiful woman, usually a well known artiste (this one looking a bit like Paule Delys, but not enough for us to feel certain...), laid into a beautifully colored card, decorated with embossed flowers. But what variety of flower? And did it really matter? Oh yes, indeed it did!

In the "language of flowers," every bloom carried with it a sentiment, or told a story. A bouquet of flowers, depending upon the combination of varieties present and their arrangement, could tell a story, or send a detailed message.

In Ravel's 1911 short ballet "Adelaide, ou la Langage des Fleurs," The Russian dancer Trouhanova both produced the ballet and performed the part of Adelaide, who, for example, received from one suitor a sunflower (which signified empty riches), and with it a diamond necklace. Upon another suitor, she bestowed a poppy (suggesting that he should "forget" his love for her), but later, to the man who gave her the sunflower, she offers only the acacia (symbolic of platonic affection), dashing his hopes, and finally, coming to her decision, gives the lover, to whom she had earlier given a poppy, a red, red rose, which, as anyone knows, symbolizes her true love. :) Remember, this was a ballet. The symbolic meaning of the flowers was not expressed verbally, but already known to the audience of that time.

Attaching symbolic, magical and yes, divinatory, meanings (he loves me, he loves me not) to flowers, dates back probably thousands of years, spans the globe, and of course, just as one might be said to be "green" with envy in Philadelphia PA, or "yellow" with envy, in Berlin, the symbolism of a particular blossom, or bud, can differ from one place and time, to another.

Here at Red Poulaine, the place and time upon which we focus, more than any other, is France, during that period known as la Belle Epoque, and this card gives us a wonderful window through which we can see and experience a little of that time and place, from the perspective of someone who lived it.

On the face of this card was written the words, " Fleurs de Pommier," and "Discorde," or Apple Blossoms, and Discord. Carefully tipped onto the back of the card, written on both sides of a carefully folded sheet of paper, is a fairly long letter in which the author tells the story of the Judgement of Paris, wherein the goddess of discord secretly tosses a golden apple into the mix at a happy wedding feast. Upon the apple is inscribed the words, "to the fairest." Of course, immediately, three goddesses each suggest that their beauty alone deserves the apple, and Zeus is asked to decide which of the three will receive it. Zeus, being all-wise, suggests that such a judgment is best left to an unbiased party, and demands that the king of Troy, Paris, make the decision.
Well, we won't spoil the story for you, but you can imagine that nothing but difficulty follows. Here's a hint: Trojan War? :)

The letter itself refers to the choice made by Paris, underlines the word "preference," and seems to suggest that the author has chosen between lovers, and refers to a day spent in temptation and indulgence, and an unfortunate idea. So tantalizing and mysterious! But the long and the short of it is that we believe this letter to be a "Dear John," or "Jill," and that the author is, in their own, "flowery" way, letting a lover down easy.
How we wish we were fluent in French, so that we could really be certain, or at least more certain, as to the letter's meaning, but at the very least, this card, and the letter attached to it, gives us a lively perspective on "Le Langage des Fleurs," and its popularity, in Belle Epoque France.

Many thanks to google books as a source for information on Ravel's ballet. Link to that source:
