The Pheasant of Chantecler, Mme. Simone. circa 1910 by redpoulaine

Beautiful hand-tinted image of Mme. Simone in costume as la Faisane, the Pheasant, in Edmond Rostand's play Chantecler. We have not been able to dig up much history on Mme. Simone, apart from the fact that she was married to Claude Casimir-Pener, the son of the former president of France. Very nice condition on this unposted card with a nicely deckled edge.

Fabulous French Faux Nude with Snake, circa 1900, by Henri Manuel by redpoulaine

A superbly naive image of an unidentified model "en collant" (in a body stocking) with a really great snake! One has to wonder, when viewing an image of this kind, whether the goal was humor, titillation, gender politics, a biblical reference of any kind, or a mix of oh, so many things, but the quality of the image is undeniable. Her facial expression seems to us to say, "Et alors! You think I can't handle this?" :)

Talk about a time machine.... The feel of the period derived from a card like this one is sensational. We sold one of these last year that was hand-tinted, to a very pleased customer, and we loved that one too, but there is something about a fine photograph in natural sepia tones that is just so...wonderful.

This card was published by SIP (the Societe Industrielle de Photographie), one of the most prolific French postcard publishers at that time. The image was photographed by Henri Manuel, and given the age of the card (its production date, by its undivided back, is likely to have been before 1904), the photo would have been taken not long after Monsieur Manuel and his brother, Gaston (about whom we can find no information whatsoever), opened their first portrait studio in Paris, in 1900.

Henri Manuel's name appears on many of the cards we bring into our shop, and though most of the subjects we deal in are very light-hearted, Manuel himself was a serious photographer, and an astute business man. He became well known not only for his portraits of theatrical personalities, risque nudes, and romantic fantaisies, but more, for his portraits of famous politicians, art, architecture, and in 1910, "Manuel's studio began providing a commercial service to news agencies for photographs known as "l’Agence universelle de reportage Henri Manuel."" (see Wikipedia) His studio grew to be the largest in Paris, a recognized center for the development (forgive the pun :) of the photographic arts, and for the three decades between 1914 and 1944, Henri Manuel held the post of official photographer for the French government. Because we know his studio operations were shut down during WWII, we wonder if during the last years he held that government post (when France was under German occupation), he worked for "Free France," but we haven't yet found a lot of history on that period. Henri Manuel passed away in 1947.

Just to give you an idea of the broad scope of the man's work, below is a link to a site showing a few of some 2500 photographs Manuel's studio produced of French prisons and juvenile facilities between the years 1929 and 1931, for the French Department of Justice. Pretty grim stuff, but though Red Poulaine is very much about the frolicsome fun, we feel it's important to give you background on our photographers and artistes when possible, and well...we just love the stories :).

Famed Operatic Tenor, Enrico Caruso. Elegant Portrait, circa 1905 by redpoulaine

Enrico Caruso, 1873-1921, was an Italian tenor who thrilled audiences all over Europe and the Americas. He sang in St. Petersburg for the Czar, appeared before the King of England by royal command, was 18 seasons lead tenor with the Met in New York, and was the first recording artist ever to sell a million copies of a record (an early recording of Vesti la giubba from Pagliacci).
Fame and fortune, however, did not come quickly or easily to Caruso. He came from a relatively humble background in Naples Italy, and according to a really fine Wikipedia article, he was 18 years old before he bought his first new pair of shoes with money he'd earned singing.

How do we know this card dates back to around 1905 as we suggest in this listing title? Well, apart from our amazing powers of psychic card dating :), cards published in Germany, as this one was, seldom had divided backs before 1904, and oh, we read a newspaper article taken from a 1906 New York Times which made a huge deal about a never before seen mustache-less Caruso! Such fun. Brief and amusing. You can read it too. Link below.

This is the aria that so many Hollywood styled Italian gangsters are portrayed as weeping to, but we'll let youse guys in on a little secret. You don't gotta be a tough guy. Red weeps buckets whenevah dis here song is played :) Link below.

Caruso lived a remarkable life and brought joy to millions with his gorgeous voice. In 1921, at the age of 48, he succumbed to a kidney infection resulting from undiagnosed pleurisy.

This is such a great image. Gorgeous tones and contrast. It was printed in Germany for what looks very much like a German publishing house with offices in London, Breitkopf and Haertel, and also there is a shared attribution with the Parisian music publishers, Costallat et Cie. Very nice unposted condition.

Superb "paper moon" image published by Rotophot during the very early 1900s (probably around 1905-10). This was before Heinrich Ross, later of RossVerlag, was involved with the company. Rotophot was a German company, with offices and presses throughout Europe and the UK, and was, up until WWI, probably one of the largest, and most influential postcard publishers. Absolutely charming image! She is so cute, and what about those little striped stockings. Hand tinted in beautiful vibrant colors. Very minor corner and edge wear, otherwise a fine, posted card.

American Opera Diva Geraldine Farrar Shares a Moment with the Audience, circa 1900 by redpoulaine

Geraldine Farrar. She really was adorable! Perhaps some film enthusiast out there will share our memory of a scene from the wonderful film "The Third Man," in which Valli, performing onstage, and wearing a powdered wig like Miss Farrar's, shares a smile with the audience, thereby "breaking the fourth wall," as they say. This image, for us, immediately brings that scene to mind.
Geraldine Farrar was born in 1882, in Massachusetts, In 1901 Berlin she enjoyed tremendous acclaim following her debut as Marguerite in Gounod's Faust. One of her fans was the eldest son of the Kaiser, Crown Prince Wilhelm, with whom she was reputed to have had an affair.
Returning to the United States, Miss Farrar was a member of the Met, from 1907 until her retirement in 1922. In between opera seasons she appeared in a number of silent films, and was followed about by crowds of enthusiastic young women who earned the name Gerry-flappers!
This is a gorgeous card, probably printed very early on in her career while she was still in Berlin.

And where is the girl who looks after the sheep?
Why, under the haystack, of course!

Wonderful card, which although very tame by today's standards, we will file under the heading of "risque" by those antiquated standards of yesterday. We particularly love the use of red coloring, casually applied onto the image surface in an almost impressionistic fashion. Wonderful early tinted postcard in really wonderful condition. This same model changes this costume for one of an Algerian belly dancer in another card we just acquired. Please follow link below to see it!

Black Friday Cyber Monday Unidentified Image of Theda Bara, Silent Screen Icon, posted 1912 by redpoulaine

$

74.25 USD

We are rather excited about this one! Posted in 1912, in the neighborhood of two years before her first film role, we believe this to be an early unidentified image of Theda Bara, the Queen of all Hollywood Vamps.
Though several years younger in this, than in most of the images we can find of her, and tinted in pink and lavender, when we are so used to seeing her garbed in stark, gothic, black, her features are nevertheless unmistakable, and even in 1912, she had mastered the classic "I will devour you" look that brought her such undying fame.
By 1912, Miss Bara had long since left her home town of Cincinatti, moved to New York, and four years previously had made her Broadway debut in "The Devil." Also in New York, was the well known Broadway showgirl photographer Jacob Schloss. In addition to dressing up his actress models in wreaths of Spring blossoms (a la Professor Stebbing),Schloss made a common practice of of selling prints of his work to European postcard publishers, and although the actress would, even on European postcard versions, normally be identified, along with his well known "Schloss NY" identifying signature, the common practice at the time was to take the earlier identified images, and hand-tint or otherwise decorate them, at which point identifications were left off, and the card offered to a broader market of standard "glamor" shot buyers. We are confident that this is what occurred in this case, and are presently doing our best to locate the original image.
Postcard images of Theda Bara are almost impossible to find on the open market these days, and a rare early pre-movie star image is well...almost priceless. But still lacking appropriate proof, we've set a price.

Black Friday Cyber Monday Playing Dress-Up in Mama's Gown. N.P.G. Oranotype by Skowranek. Berlin, 1905 by redpoulaine

$
0

13.50 USD

Remarkable image, remarkable in particular for the quality of coloration. This card illustrates very well the quality possible with the N.P.G. oranotype. The sweet little girl is wearing Mama's silk brocade gown, but just marvel at the tinting. This is hand coloration mimicking the kind of color blending we find today in lovely dupioni silks. We believe the classic term for this is "shot" silk, a process in which the warp and weft of the fabric are of two different complimentary colors which, when woven together produce an iridescent effect. That a hand colorist can "imply" this silk weaving technique is really amazing!
This card was posted in 1905, and the photograph was by one Skowranek, possibly Otto Skowranek who, if this is the same man, which seems likely, is well known today primarily for his nude photographs, one in particular, of the famous dancer Olga Desmond posing semi-nude amidst upended swords. Some of his work was featured recently in a Berlin exhibition of early nude photography.
We have only seen any of this Skowranek's images from within this particular series, in which the child is depicted dressing up, prancing about, drinking tea, etc., with a number of different color variations, this one always having been our favorite. We're very pleased to have found one of these in such nice condition to share with you.

Black Friday Cyber Monday Maria Gioana Italian Theatrical Performer in Feathered Headdress, circa 1920s by redpoulaine

Here at Red Poulaine, we have a special place in our hearts for the Italian actress images of the early 1900s and into the 1920s. The quality of the portrait photography and subsequent postcard publication was particularly rich, with a flair for the dramatic and mysterious. Many of our favorites, like Anna Fougez and Nella Regini, began their careers as sciantose, a variation on the French term chanteuse, meaning female singer, but bringing to it other meanings, and implying a dark, mysterious, exotic quality that appealed to the theater going public at the time, and certainly appeals to us :) Naturally we love all of our images or we probably wouldn't purchase them for our shop, and feel an almost filial affection for the performers onto whom we project imagined personalities and traits (is that weird? :), but there is something about what seems to have been at the time a very Italian penchant for carrying the illusion of the stage and screen out into the public venue, a tendency to make even larger, the already "larger than life" persona of the theatrical personality, that we really love. So we have decided to open a new section devoted exclusively to these Italian artistes. We call it "La Bella Donna," and yes it is a bit of a play on words, given the tendency in many of these cards to focus on qualities of a "femme Fatale" type. We hope you will enjoy these images as much as we do.

We can find nothing on this actress, Maria Gioanna, but we certainly love this flamboyant image! A very nice, A. Traldi of Milan card, in fine condition. Please examine our high res scans for detail.

So sweet! Love the whole Art Nouveau preoccupation with the old world. Great stuff. The lovely young brunette playing the male part is holding the ancient double flute (called the Aulos, in ancient Greece), which Plato associated with the ecstatic cults of Dionysus! (thank you Wikipediia!) Click once on the image to get a nice close up. Great resolution, and these two were So charming. Minor corner and edge wear with a couple of tiny creases in corners.
