Black Friday Cyber Monday Gabrielle Robinne French Actress, Gorgeous Portrait, circa 1907, by Reutlinger by redpoulaine

6.75 USD

Gabrielle Robinne was one of France's greatest theatrical treasures. Here, the famous Reutlinger captured her beauty and those amazing, amazing eyes, in this wonderful portrait. Dated 1907, this card goes back to just after the period in which the backs of cards were for the addresses of sender and recipient only, and all text was written on the front side. The sender of this card was still stuck in the "front side" mode, and there is rather a lot of writing on the front. It doesn't really harm the actual image, but we'll discount the card anyway.
Please examine our high res scans for detail.

Wondrous Ruffles, Sparklies and Pom-Poms! Farfalla at rest. Named after our favorite antipasto...sorry, just kidding :)
Though there is actually a farfalla pasta (what we commonly refer to as a bow tie noodle), this Farfalla, though we've learned nothing about her history, was named, no doubt, for her delicate grace, as the word means butterfly in Italian. Gorgeous German image, posted in Belgium, in what looks to us like 1909. Some gentle creasing in the bottom right corner, otherwise in very nice, posted condition.

***Our apologies to our wonderful international customers for the sudden increase in shipping costs. We have been advised that our international postal rates have pretty much doubled, so until we see what's what, we're charging 8.00 dollars for 1st class shipping in a rigid photo mailer. Black Friday Cyber Monday Serpentine Dancer a la Loie Fuller, Posted in 1907 by redpoulaine

Wonderful image of a young dancer performing the Skirt, or, Serpentine dance. This was a form of dancing popularized and, to a great degree, developed by Loie Fuller, famous Belle Epoque (American) dancer and actress. As we can see in this image, the skirt is voluminous and of very light cloth. Miss Fuller was said to use sometimes as much as four, or five hundred yards of silk for some of her routines. We can also see the aluminum, or bamboo, extensions this unidentified is holding which allow her greater reach, and control over the cloth.
Ida Fuller, another Serpentine dancer, and Loie Fuller's sister in law, once discussed, in interview, the stress this performance places on the arms. To read a portion of that interview, learn much more about skirt dancing, Loie Fuller, Ida Fuller, and even to follow a link to a short film compilation of women actually performing this style of dance at the turn of the century, please follow the link below to our blog.

So sweet! Love the whole Art Nouveau preoccupation with the old world. Great stuff. The lovely young brunette playing the male part is holding the ancient double flute (called the Aulos, in ancient Greece), which Plato associated with the ecstatic cults of Dionysus! Wonderful Italian RPPC, dated August of '29. Just as they are today, trends in style in 1929 were set by images of the glamorous in the media, and we love the RPPCs of the period that show how the fashions played out in the general public. Mlle. Suzy Mabel, French Actress, Portrait by Walery, circa 1905 by redpoulaine

Gorgeously tinted image of Belle Epoque actress Suzy Mabel at the Moulin Rouge. We haven't found any biographical info on Mlle. Mabel, just yet, but we do know that she played the part of Lysistrata at some point in her career, probably in a version of the Maurice Donnay adaptation from Aristophanes.
Walery, a Lithuanian aristocrat and master portraitist, who inherited both his title of count and his trade from his father, began his career as a photographer in London, but moved his studios to Paris in 1900. He seems to have been Mlle. Mabel's favorite photographer, as all of the dozen, or so, images of her we've run across thus far, were taken by him. A lovely card.

Countess De Liguoro, Italian Silent Film Star, circa 1920 by redpoulaine

18.00 USD

Very nice A. Traldi card with their wonderful Deco/Nouveau decoration on the reverse.

What an awesome ostrich plume fan! Born in Florence, in 1892, Rina De Liguoro is sometimes known as the last of Italy's great silent movie stars. She began her stage career as a concert pianist, then acting in film in the late teens. In 1922, she starred as the Empress Messalina in "Messalina, Fall of an Empress" This was apparently the turning point in her career. Through the 20s, she made several successful films, then moved to Hollywood, but the age of the silents was over, and she won only small supporting roles. She was often billed as Countess De Liguoro, which was appropriate enough, since her husband was a count!
She returned to Italy in the late 30s, rekindled her career as a pianist while occasionally performing relatively small parts in film. She passed away in Rome, in 1966, and was buried in the costume she wore in her first big film, "Messalina."

Wonderful image of French musical comedy performer Odette Auber in the role of Parisette, the shop girl, in the very popular "Queen of the Moulin Rouge," a lavish American musical comedy from 1908, set in Montmartre, and produced by Thomas W. Ryley.
As the fourth image in this listing, we offer, ***Not For Sale***, but for your pleasure, an early image of the Circle Theater, in New York, where this show packed in the crowds. The show was also taken on the road with great success. It had a cast of a hundred singers and dancers, was expensive to produce, and was popular enough to spawn imitations like "The Girl of the Moulin Rouge."

French Actress Gilda Darthy as Cleopatra, circa 1905 by redpoulaine

19.00 USD

Okay, so she's not playing Salome, but she'll still go into that section :) Wonderful "Cleo" costume on Gilda Darthy, a highly regarded actress of la Belle Epoque. Sadly, we can find no biographical information on her, to speak of. A bit of juicy gossip though!

in 1917, about ten years after this photo was taken, she was appearing with the Opera Comique company on tour in New York with actor Edgard Beeckman, and apparently, as sometimes happens, the two got a bit carried away with their rehearsals. This resulted in Beeckman's wife, French (Corsican, actually) flapper and all around "Jazz Baby" Irene Bordoni, suing Beeckman for divorce on the grounds of infidelity, and also suing Mme. Darthy for alienation of affection! To give a fair hearing to both sides however, we should mention that Mr. Beeckman counter-sued for annulment, and claimed that his romantic entanglement with Mme. Darthy was entered into with the full consent of his wife.
Magnificent image, published by Carl and Max Kunzli of Switzerland, under their Parisian mark, KF (Kunzli Freres). Great use of cameos in the costume. Lots of fun! There is an odd "fault?" in the image, just above and to the left of the snake's head, we can't figure out exactly what it is, but it doesn't quite seem to be a part of the costume, and is not a fault on the card, rather on the print, or negative.

Young Dancer in Carnivale Mask, circa 1905 by redpoulaine

17.00 USD

Wonderful German card, circa 1905 of a young lady in Gypsy costume, and masked for a fete. We've seen others out of this series in which she has removed her mask. Great fun. The extra long ruffle on the bodice of her dress accentuates the effect of the corset. Wonderfully "candid" pose, considering the time it took to shoot a photo in those days.
This image was printed on "Papier Radium Brom," indicating that the paper was treated with radium bromide, making it slightly radioactive, and heightening the brilliance, particularly, of coloration. As to the levels of radioactivity, fear not. These cards do not glow under a black light any more than the average, and we even borrowed a friends Geiger counter and didn't get any sort of a reading...yes we do our homework :) Card is addressed, in a lovely hand, to a Monsieur Chibault Palmyr, musicien. In the lower right quadrant there is evidence of a postal imprint, hardly noticeable, but it's there all the same. Otherwise, such a wonderful card.

Belle Epoque Artiste Paule Morly, All A'Glitter, circa 1905 by redpoulaine

$

22.00 USD

Gorgeously hand-colored and very carefully glittered Stebbing image of Mlle. Paule Morly, from a wonderful series of cards published by Monsieur G. Piprot of Etoile, in Paris.

Paule Morly (born Charlotte Martin, 1881-1926), was probably most well known for her interpretation of the Afro-Brazilian dance, the Mattchiche, or Maxixe, which she perfomed with Mlle. Marthe Derminy in 1905, at the Alcazar D'Ete. The music to which they danced was from a song by the same name, La Maxixe, performed by singer Felix Mayol and instantly popular. This resulted in Mlles Morly and Derminy being pictured on the cover of the sheet music, selling in uncountable numbers, copies of which may still be found available online for a few dollars (we're looking :).

This is the third time we've had a card from this series in our shop, but the first time one of them was so beautifully glittered. Glitters and sequins, ribbons and even human hair, were (we've been given to understand) applied on cards at the publishers, but also by the folks at home. Postcards were so hugely popular at this time, that kits intended to be used for their coloring and decoration were sold to enthusiasts!

We're very pleased to be offering you this card in such fine condition. Please examine our high res scans for detail.
