Modestie 1910s/20s PC Paris Postcard of Bathing Belgian Beauty by redpoulaine

9.00USD

Published in the teens or twenties by PC Paris, this postcard was one of the series, Les Plus Belles Femmes de Belgique, (The most beautiful women of Belgium,) This was a gorgeous series of cards which, like the "Plus Belles" series produced by the Noyer studios was, I suspect, an offering to the "average" woman(and man) of France/Belgium as a compliment to the ever popular "glamour cards" of the era, but using amateur models. Anyone with information on these series is welcome to respond!

Kamajoeh, Mozambique Beauty En Voile, circa 1905 by redpoulaine

As well as being a lovely image in and of itself, this is a very interesting card for a number of reasons. Though it bears a German stamp, and was probably produced in Germany, the image itself is quite probably French (by style and costume), and the actress/performer is a woman of color, whose name (probably Swahili or possibly Malagasy), would identify her as perhaps coming from the Portuguese colony of Mozambique in Africa, or the French colony of Madagascar off Africa's coast. Also interesting is that her costume, the layers of filmy material, wrapped low about her shoulders, and her hair, done up in the classic chignon so popular in that period, are distinctly French European in style. Why do we find this so fascinating? Primarily because although dance, music, and costume in the France of the late 19th, early 20th centuries was clearly influenced by the cultures of European colonial holdings, It is uncommon to find on postcards images of performers of color who actually come from these colonies.

Theatrical entertainment in France at that time was full of the romantic idealization of foreign cultures. Margaretha McLeod, a young Dutch woman who apparently learned Indonesian dance while locked in a terribly unhappy marriage in the Dutch East Indies, left her husband, made her way to Paris and, in the proud tradition of P.T. Barnum, changed her name to Mata Hari, billed herself as a Javanese princess, became hugely successful with her sensual dance routines, and the rest is history. There were so many others, many images of whom, from time to time, grace the cards we sell in our shop, but almost always they are white Europeans.

Still, though such images as this one are uncommon, we feel it's important to point out that the egalitarian nature of French society was such that performers of all cultural, religious, and ethnic origins made their way to Paris, where many found success and fame. After all, it was in the Paris of the 1920s that Josephine Baker, the famous African American dancer and stage performer, found a broad acceptance and venue for her talent that had not been available to her in the United States of that time.

Finally, we want to acknowledge that we are mere dabblers in history, and certainly not historians. Our focus is limited and narrow, and our short posts far from even remotely complete. So we offer our observations in the spirit of enthusiastic collectors, and hope they are welcomed by fellow enthusiasts and that our over simplifications of complex historical issues and events are forgiven by those more knowledgeable than ourselves.

Reta Walter, Jugendstil Epoche German Opera Singer by redpoulaine

Amazing curls! Particularly charming image of Reta Walter, who was probably best known for her performances with the Berlin Comische Opera Company in the title role of the hugely popular opera, Mignon, the tale of a tragic Gypsy girl that captured and held the collective imagination of Europe for some decades.
Mlle. Walter, though any real biographical material is very difficult to come across, was apparently the victim of very real tragedy herself.
The story we've found on a number of blog sites, though we've yet to find one offering citations, is that Reta was involved in a long term romance with one Karl Hesse, a wealthy man who at some point lost his fortune and to whom she gave financial support.
Apparently in the year 1906, the relationship turned sour, Reta fell in love with a Spanish singer, and Mr. Hesse, in a fit of rage, shot her to death and then turned the gun on himself.
We'll no doubt run across more of her history in the future, and update her biography in future listings.
Card is in nice, posted, condition, with some very minor creasing in upper right corner.

Beauregard is regarding you! :) Wonderful Reutlinger image published by SIP (Societe Industrielle de Photographie). We would guess that during that period very close to 1900, SIP was probably the largest postcard publisher of performance art portraits in France. Haven't researched it yet, this is based entirely on what passes through our hands, but they certainly produced a tremendous number, many of them among our very favorites! Very nice condition on this card too.

She's so saucy. :) Mlle. Miette was a headliner at the Cigale. Still looking for more information on her, so this is a bit of a mystery card, but what a card, yeah? The hand coloration is marvelous. We do know that Mlle. Miette performed not only with the guitar, but with the banjo, as well.

Aubrey Beardsley Print, circa 1900 by redpoulaine

35.00USD

Wonderful find! In 1897, one year before his death, Aubrey Beardsley was hard at work on a collection of illustrations for Mademoiselle de Maupin, a romance by Theophile Gautier. This work was to be a turning point in his career-a dramatic change in style. For admirers of Beardsley's work, who may have seen some of his illustrations for Wilde's Salome, or cover art for the "Yellow Book," the dramatic contrast of light and dark in his pen and ink drawings will have been more than apparent, even brilliant, but Beardsley was experimenting with more detail now, finer lines, and washes, resulting in softer tones-mid-range contrasts-that required the delicacy of a photogravure plate. Wonderful stuff!
The work on the book was never finished, though, and Aubrey Beardsley died the next year, having completed only six of the illustrations. These six were published by Leonard Smithers in 1898, limited to 50 copies, and distributed unbound in half cloth portfolios.
Our print, discovered in a ratty old frame at a church rummage sale, is of one of those illustrations: "Lady with Monkey," and is very likely to be from the 1898 portfolio edition. It is on fine, heavy stock, deeply impressed by the plate, and the entire sheet measures approx. 10 and 3/4 by 13 and 1/2 inches, while the plate depression measures 7 and 3/8 by 8 and 6/8 inches. Evident in our scans, the print shows some foxing, and age discoloration near the edges which were just inside the mat. Also about a square 3/4 inch of the upper right corner of the sheet was torn away at some time in the past, but this would be beneath the matting once framed, in any case.
This beautiful print, though flawed, presents the opportunity to add to your collection an original print of Beardsley's work, and will undoubtedly make someone deliriously happy!
We will ship this print, unframed, first class, and sandwiched safely between stiff cardboard sheets.

Wonderful image! Gorgeous costume. This performer's name could be "Miss Ruby" (the name written on the back of the card), which wouldn't be that strange actually, as many performers in the Paris music halls took the names of precious gems and metals, as well as flowers, etc., but we'll have to leave her as unidentified for the time being. Nice condition. Very gentle crease in upper right hand corner.

Welcome to "Idols of the 1920s," where we hope to provide a special, cozy place for those of you who long to linger among the stars of the early silver screen, the hoofers and songbirds of dear old vaudeville's fading hours, a few diva's of the grand opera, and of the operetta too, flappers, flappers, more flappers, and of course, and perhaps especially, those femmes fatales who with one smoldering glance can melt a heart, or break it in two. Have fun!

Fabulous feathers! When we look for history on Mlle. LeGrande, we find sites that list her birth date as 1920. Perhaps a different lady? This one was a silent film star in the 1920s. Absolutely fantastic card by Traldi of Milan, with their trademark Art Deco/Nouveau design on the reverse. Nice, unposted condition.

Lya Mara, Silent Film Actress, in a Fabulous Headdress, circa 1920s by redpoulaine

Welcome to "Idols of the 1920s," where we hope to provide a special, cozy place for those of you who long to linger among the stars of the early silver screen, the hoofers and songbirds of dear old vaudeville's fading hours, a few divas of the grand opera, and of the operetta too, flappers, flappers, more flappers, and of course, and perhaps especially, those femmes fatales who with one smoldering glance can melt a heart, or break it in two. Have fun!

Lya Mara (Also Lia), 1897-1960, was born Aleksandra Gudowicz to Polish parents. When the family moved to Warsaw at the beginning of WWI, Aleksandra studied stagecraft, soon began dancing professionally, and eventually became a hugely popular star of German silent films. She did not, however, make the transition to the talkies. Her career faded, and when Hitler came to power in '33, she and her husband, director and producer Frederic Zelnik, with whom she had enjoyed great success in earlier years, left Germany for London, where Zelnik continued to direct and produce films.

Crown of Flowers, Jugendstil Epoche Maiden, Biogravure by Steglitz, circa 1905 by redpoulaine

18.00USD

So sweet! unidentified German maiden wearing a crown of flowers. This is a very well preserved biogravure (a photographic printing technique used, and perhaps developed, by A. G. Steglitz of Berlin, a photographer and inventor), and published by NPG (der Neue Photographische Gesellschaft), a German publishing house which, at its height, was one of the largest and most influential international publishers of the "Art" postcard in the world.

We are still trying to learn a bit about the biogravure process. Unfortunately, there were so many experimental photo printing processes during the late 19th/early 20th century, that many are simply forgotten at this point. One thing we can say, is that the metallic salts of silver used in that particular process had the habit, over time, of migrating to the surface of the print and creating marvelous silver washes, primarily around the outer edges. Oxidization will manifest this way in all gelatin silver photographic prints, we think, but only more-so in our experience of the biogravure. The fourth image shown in this listing is NOT FOR SALE, and not even our card, but we have it here to give you an example of how beautiful a nicely oxidized Steglitz biogravure can be!

The term Jugendstil Epoche literally translates from the German as "the Age of Art Nouveau," which is a little more specific than "Belle Epoque" (the Beautiful Era), or what we in the USA referred to as the "Gilded Age," but refers to pretty much the same period in history.

Italian Sciantosa Anna Fouguez, as Pierrette. Magnificent Portrait, circa 1920 by redpoulaine

24.00USD

Here at Red Poulaine, we have a special place in our hearts for the Italian actress images of the early 1900s and into the 1920s. The quality of the portrait photography and subsequent postcard publication was particularly rich, with a flair for the dramatic and mysterious. Many of our favorites, like Anna Fougez and Nella Regini, began their careers as sciantose, a variation on the French term chanteuse, meaning female singer, but bringing to it other meanings, and implying a dark, mysterious, exotic quality that appealed to the theater going public at the time, and certainly appeals to us :) Naturally we love all of our images or we probably wouldn't purchase them for our shop, and feel an almost filial affection for the performers onto whom we project imagined personalities and traits (is that weird? :), but there is something about what seems to have been at the time a very Italian penchant for carrying the illusion of the stage and screen out into the public venue, a tendency to make even larger, the already "larger than life" persona of the theatrical personality, that we really love. So we have decided to open a new section devoted exclusively to these Italian artistes. We call it "La Bella Donna," and yes it is a bit of a play on words, given the tendency in many of these cards to focus on qualities of a "femme Fatale" type. We hope you will enjoy these images as much as we do.
