The "Sisters Lorrison" were a music, dance, and pantomime team composed, presumably, of several (you guessed it), sisters! :) Most images of them we've seen show between four and six young ladies dressed very similarly to this one, and usually posed in a likewise dramatic fashion. We think this one is Cissy Lorrison, but can't be certain.Great fun! They performed at Anthony's in Paris, a music hall, among other locations, and are easily recognizable, in many of their images, by their dramatic chignons and classical drapery. There are also a number of images we've seen picturing them in very interesting bathing attire!

Exquisite portrait of a sadly unidentified dancer, and with no photographer attribution either (if we were to guess, we would think this was perhaps taken by Paul Boyer). Please do zoom in on this image for detail! To begin with, she is a remarkably beautiful woman, with dark, dark eyes, and dark hair. She is posed in front of a really lovely trompe l'oeil (the importance of which should not be minimized), wearing a lace mantilla on the back of her head, to show her hair off to its best advantage, and draped over her right shoulder. Her skirt appears to be made of an almost pleated silk with a fringe of little pointed danglies, while worn so close as to make it seem almost the top to her outfit, is a very large (probably also woven of silk), Manila shawl, with a striped pattern, minus the more common birds or flowers. On her breast is pinned a crescent moon, and on her feet, a pair of very fine, tight laced, high heeled boots of thin, light toned leather. Get as close as you like. The clarity of detail in this print is marvelous! Yes, we really do love this one very much! :) Minor wear to edges and corners, and a tiny discoloration beside the toe of her right boot.

Located between Paris and Geneva is the wine capital of Burgundy, Beaune (pronounced almost as in the English word "bone"). Apparently it was following a stage appearance there, in 1912, that this card was dedicated to an admiring fan by Miry Cassari, or perhaps Lassari, we don't know, and cannot find history for a Belle Epoque actress by either of these names. In any case, it is a wonderful image, and in a way there is something wistfully romantic and magical about the autograph of a forgotten actress. So often we have read about the immortality of the old gods having been dependent upon the worship of their followers. Perhaps, merely through the appreciation of this fine, evocative image, we can breathe a little life into the "joie de vivre" expressed by this lovely young woman, so long ago, and share in some of it ourselves.
A very nice autographed card with only very minor corner and edge wear.

Of course we are fond of shoes! This IS, after all, Red Poulane! :) Here we have an absolutely wonderful French RPPC of a proud family, in "Sunday best," standing outside their shoe store. We are imagining that these are shoes and boots they make themselves, but possibly this is simply a retail shop. We cannot know. The young man might be the son, the younger brother, or an unrelated apprentice. Taking into account the style of the boy's haircut, the quality of his trousers, and the practical "workman-like" style of his footwear, compared to the relatively fancy dress of the man, the apprentice idea carries more than a little weight. We are including a close up of the woman in this listing, not because the man's mustache is anything less than fascinating, but because we were really touched by the very charming, yet homespun, efforts at decorating her otherwise rather dowdy dress. She is a very attractive young woman, and see how with these crenelation stitches and diamond shaped appliques she's worked into her dress she is saying, "I am a proper wife, and I wear a proper dress, but I'll be damned if I won't make at least this one small concession to my individuality!" :)
There is a good bit of surface wear on this card. We find this more often with RPPCs than with commercial postcards. The RPPC, frequently produced by an itinerant photographer and developed on site for a single individual or family, was as close to a "one-off" as we're likely to get in photo postcards. They were often valuable keepsakes and much loved, as this one must have been, and not always gently so.

Really lovely portrait, posted in the early 1900s, postmark is a bit too murky to pin down. This card was probably placed in a frame on a mantel, and in order to fit the frame, its corners were trimmed. Our price reflects this.

Yet another fine example of Belle Epoque performance art costume inspired by the culture of one of France's colonial interests, in this case probably Algeria, where in and around the range of the Ouled Nail mountains, a group of Berber tribes known (at least to the French), as the Ouled Nail people wore these decorative headdresses. Beautiful young dancer, and what an expression!
A very nice unposted card.

La Princesse des Canaries was an opera bouffe by Charles Lecocq that premiered in the 1880s and continued to be quite popular for many years. An English language version, Pepita, was also produced and like the original, met with great success.
Paulette Del Baye was a popular stage performer of la Belle Epoque, and following the First World War, also made a number of silent films. One of them, "The Fruitful Vine," made in 1921, is notable for the appearance of a young Basil Rathbone, who is now well remembered for his film portrayals of Sherlock Holmes, but then, as a worldly old shoe salesman once confided in me, "...the game's a foot..." to which I coquettishly responded, "But surely, my good sir, it is my leg that you are pulling."
Somebody get the hook!.

Quite the card for being an RPPC and not a commercial effort. The card appears to be dated 1914. We cannot figure out what language is being used on the reverse of the card. Some of the words seem to translate into Slovak, some perhap even phonetic Hebrew? We are stumped! But what an image. How cute are they? Really. One simply cannot measure that level of cute. We tried, but sparks flew out of the cute-o-meter, and it made crazy whirring noises, so we gave up. By the way, please note that these were VERY active children, and sneaky! How do we know? Why else would ordinary loving parents tie bells to their children? Ha. Some wear on edges and corners, overall very nice. Please examine our high res scans.

Very odd....but great fun! Two woodland fairies playing woodland fairy games on an upended mushroom! One really cannot help but wonder what Sigmund would have to say about this one.
Photograph by Traut, though unsigned.
Heinrich Traut (aka Henry), was a German photographer, inventor and patent holder (he patented an electric arc lamp for photographic lighting), of the Jugendstil Epoche whose studio was based in Munich Germany. Thirty years ago, we first learned about Traut's work because signed (identified), images were quite sought after, just as they are today. Traut's images, though we haven't run across a great many actual nudes, per se, sometimes bordered on the erotic and innuendo-ish, and possibly that is what a lot of the hub-bub's been about, but at least half of the Traut images we've run across in intervening years have been beautifully wrought photographs of mothers and children, heart warming, lovely, innocent stuff. Like many of the popular Belle Epoque photographers and their publishers, Traut seems to have covered a very broad spectrum of subject in his work.

Have fun!

Lots of fun! Similar to the "Harem," or "Odalisque" sub-genre, this one plays with the western image of "Geisha." Wonderful image. Sexy, silly, really neat tromp l'oeil with the added touch of bamboo. Again, France had colonial interests all over the globe. In the far east, not the least of which, was Indochine, what is now Viet Nam, and as in the case of Morocco and Algiers, ideas, products, and images, made their way back to the continent, and played a tremendous part in shaping popular French culture. This is one of two cards from the same series we recently acquired. Very nice, unposted condition. Please examine our high res scans for detail.
