Precious Image from Chantecler, Viennese Postcard circa 1910 by B. Bing
Precious still, or promotional image, of a scene from Edmond Rostand's play, "Chantecler," which was first produced in 1910. The play was set in a barnyard, with all the characters costumed as chickens, roosters, owls, etc. Postcard images from various productions of the play abound. This one is so charming! This particular production ran at the Apollo Theater in Vienna and the card itself is dated 1910 next to the photographer's name, B. Bing, in the lower left corner.
Polly Koss, the mother hen in the image, was an Austrian actress and soubrette who was born in Vienna in 1880, making her about twenty at the time this photograph was taken.
